Korean Biotech Hyundai Bioscience Reports Positive Phase II Results for Oral COVID-19 Treatment CP-COV03
核心洞察
Hyundai Bioscience (搜索)'s oral antiviral CP-COV03 (Xafty) demonstrated efficacy in treating COVID-19 (搜索) symptoms in a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial with 300 patients.
The niclosamide-based drug showed faster recovery times and reduced hospitalization risk compared to placebo, with no serious adverse events reported.
CP-COV03 is positioned as a safer and more effective alternative to existing COVID-19 (搜索) treatments like Paxlovid, with potential for broader antiviral applications.
Korean biotech company Hyundai Bioscience (搜索) has announced positive results from a Phase II clinical trial of its oral antiviral treatment CP-COV03 (also known as Xafty) for COVID-19 (搜索), with findings published in Nature Communications. The randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled study involving 300 patients demonstrated the drug's efficacy in treating mild to moderate COVID-19 symptoms.
Clinical Trial Results
The study, led by researchers primarily from South Korean universities, showed that CP-COV03 effectively improved COVID-19 (搜索) symptoms for more than 48 hours with no serious adverse events. According to Dankook University professor Choy Jin-ho, one of the paper's corresponding co-authors, "Patients treated with CP-COV03 returned to usual health more quickly and had a lower risk of hospitalization compared to the control group."
The drug successfully addressed major COVID-19 (搜索) symptoms as defined by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, including cough, headache, sore throat, nausea, and chills. Professor Choy emphasized that the results demonstrate CP-COV03 is "safe and effective in patients suffering from mild to moderate COVID-19."
Niclosamide-Based Formulation
CP-COV03 is based on niclosamide, a well-established medication previously used to treat tapeworm infections (搜索). The reformulation addresses historical limitations of niclosamide, which has had restricted clinical use due to poor solubility and bioavailability issues.
"Niclosamide's clinical use has been limited due to poor solubility and bioavailability. However, our study indicates that niclosamide-based CP-COV03 works as a safer and more effective alternative to previous COVID-19 (搜索) treatments such as Paxlovid," Choy stated.
Regulatory Pathway and Commercial Potential
If later-stage trials prove successful and the medication receives approval from Korea's Ministry of Food and Drug Safety, CP-COV03 could be available as early as next year. Professor Choy noted the drug's strong commercial potential given its improved formulation of an established compound.
Broader Antiviral Applications
Hyundai Bioscience (搜索) plans to develop CP-COV03 as a versatile antiviral treatment extending beyond COVID-19 (搜索). CEO Bae Byoung-jun indicated the company's readiness to produce CP-COV03 as a broad-spectrum treatment once authorized in target countries.
The company has already received approval to initiate a seamless Phase II/III clinical trial in Vietnam for dengue fever (搜索) treatment. "We hope to launch the study this year, with the aim of bringing the drug to market next year," Bae said in a phone interview.
This development represents a significant advancement in oral antiviral therapy, potentially offering healthcare providers and patients a new treatment option with demonstrated safety and efficacy profiles in the COVID-19 (搜索) indication, while showing promise for broader antiviral applications.
