Kuehnle AgroSystems (搜索) (KAS), an algal biotechnology company headquartered in Honolulu, has announced the successful close of a multi-million-dollar Series B financing round. The investment, led by Ichthus Venture Capital (搜索) (IVC) with continued participation from existing investors S2G Investments (搜索) and Hatch Blue (搜索) alongside new investor Dest EOOD (搜索), is designed to accelerate the company's transition from technology development to commercial production and sales of sustainable natural astaxanthin.
The financing follows what the company describes as a landmark technical achievement: in collaboration with manufacturing partner Biorea (搜索), KAS successfully demonstrated — for the first time anywhere in the world — the production of natural astaxanthin in oleoresin using proprietary dark fermentation technology at an industrially relevant scale. This breakthrough establishes the technical foundation for what the company anticipates will be a step-change in the cost of production of sustainable, natural astaxanthin.

The global astaxanthin market is valued at approximately US$2 billion and is forecast to grow at 15% annually over the coming decade. Demand is being driven by two converging trends: the continued expansion of global salmon aquaculture, where astaxanthin is an essential feed ingredient, and rapid growth in the premium nutraceutical market, where natural astaxanthin is increasingly recognised as one of the world's most potent antioxidants.
In salmon aquaculture, astaxanthin serves a dual purpose. Beyond providing the characteristic pink colour consumers expect, it is a critical nutrient that supports fish health, fertility, stress tolerance, immune function and overall production performance. As global salmon production continues to increase, the industry is simultaneously seeking more sustainable and resilient ingredient supply chains. Investor perspective and governance
As part of the financing, Frode Sandmark, representing IVC, will join the KAS Board of Directors. IVC is the venture investment arm of Kverva, one of the world's leading investment companies within marine and aquaculture-related industries and the largest shareholder in SalMar ASA, one of the world's largest Atlantic salmon farming companies.

The new financing will enable KAS to expand its scientific and engineering teams, strengthen manufacturing readiness, complete regulatory programmes and engage with leading aquaculture and human nutrition companies as it prepares for commercial launch. Specific allocation of funds includes expansion of research and development capabilities, acceleration of the strategic development programme with Corbion (搜索), development and validation of salmon feed products, pursuit of global regulatory approvals for aquaculture and human nutrition markets, and manufacturing scale-up and commercial deployment.
