Ladakh Set to Become India's First Region to Complete Census 2027 by September

Ladakh is poised to become the first Union Territory or state in India to complete the entire Census 2027 exercise by the end of September this year.
Chief Principal Census Officer Amit Sharma announced that census activity in all other states and Union Territories will conclude by the end of February next year.
The census process now incorporates digital technology and self-enumeration, with self-enumeration beginning on August 17 and the final population enumeration phase running from September 2 to 30.
Ladakh is set to become the first Union Territory or state in the country to complete the entire census exercise by the end of September this year, Chief Principal Census Officer (CPCO) Amit Sharma announced on Wednesday. Speaking at a census quiz-cum-awareness seminar at the Leh Campus of the University of Ladakh, Sharma said census activity in all other states and Union Territories would be completed by the end of February next year.
"The UT of Ladakh shall emerge as the first UT/State in the nation which shall complete the entire census activity by the end of September this year," Sharma said.
Digital Transformation and Self-Enumeration
Sharma highlighted the change in the census process through the use of digital technology and encouraged students to take part in developments linked to Census 2027, including self-enumeration. Self-enumeration for the exercise will begin on August 17, with the upcoming final and most important phase of population enumeration scheduled from September 2 to 30.
He asked students and faculty members of the university to act as "true messengers of Census 2027" and spread awareness about the upcoming phase.
Community Engagement and Awareness Efforts
Officials said the event was organised to create awareness among faculty members and students about the importance of the census and the upcoming final and most important phase of population enumeration. Sharma also urged the youth to stay away from drugs and stressed the need to focus on education, innovation and constructive activities.
University of Ladakh Vice-Chancellor Saket Kushwaha said the census is an important exercise for planning, policy formulation and understanding the country's socio-economic landscape. He encouraged students to take an active part in awareness efforts and help ensure the successful conduct of Census 2027.
Public Participation Through the Census Marathon
Hundreds of participants joined a Census 2027 Awareness Marathon organised by the Directorate of Census Operations, Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh, in Leh to promote public awareness and participation in the upcoming census. The marathon was jointly flagged off from Martyrs Chowk, Leh by Director General of Police, Ladakh, Anand Jain, CPCO and Director of Census Operations (DCO), Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh, Amit Sharma, and Vice Chancellor, University of Ladakh, Prof. Saket Kushwaha, in the presence of a large gathering.
Overall, the seminar focused on the significance of the census and Ladakh's effort to complete the exercise ahead of the rest of the country.
