The research team, led by Dr. Kyla Taylor, found that higher fluoride exposure was consistently associated with lower IQ scores, with a standardized mean difference of -0.45 between high and low exposure groups, equivalent to approximately 7 IQ points.

The analysis revealed a clear dose-response relationship between fluoride exposure and cognitive impacts. In studies measuring individual-level urinary fluoride, researchers found that each 1-mg/L increase in urinary fluoride corresponded to a 1.63-point decrease in IQ scores (95% CI -2.33 to -0.93, P<0.001).
The findings were particularly notable in the 31 studies that measured fluoride in drinking water, showing a significant dose-response association (SMD -0.15, 95% CI -0.20 to -0.11, P<0.001). However, when restricted to concentrations below 1.5 mg/L - the WHO's defined upper safe limit - the association became statistically insignificant.
Current Guidelines and Public Health Implications
The study's findings come at a crucial time when fluoride guidelines are under scrutiny.
