Lightbridge Secures Key Patent Approvals for Advanced Nuclear Fuel Technology in Canada and Europe
核心洞察
Lightbridge Corporation (搜索) received patent allowances from both the Canadian Intellectual Property Office (搜索) and European Patent Office (搜索) for its innovative nuclear fuel assembly designs and multi-zone fuel element technology.
The Canadian patent covers fuel assemblies with helically twisted fuel elements in mixed grid patterns, particularly relevant for CANDU reactors and pressurized heavy water reactor systems.
The European patent protects multi-zone fuel elements manufactured via 3D printing technology, extending intellectual property coverage across 39 European contracting states including major nuclear markets.
Lightbridge Corporation (搜索) has secured significant intellectual property protection for its advanced nuclear fuel technology with patent allowances from regulatory authorities in Canada and Europe, marking important milestones in the company's path toward commercializing its next-generation nuclear fuel systems.
Canadian Patent Approval for Fuel Assembly Design
The Canadian Intellectual Property Office (搜索) issued a Notice of Allowance for Patent Application No. 2,960,383, titled "Fuel Assembly," covering 48 claims directed to fuel assemblies comprising helically twisted fuel elements arranged in mixed grid patterns. The patent, originally filed in September 2015, describes fuel assemblies with helically twisted fuel elements supported by a frame in a fuel rod bundle and arranged in mixed grid configurations that include both rectangular and triangular patterns.
Through a Request for Continued Examination, Lightbridge secured broader claims covering fuel assemblies with mixed grid patterns without specifying particular shapes of those patterns. The patent is particularly relevant to pressurized heavy water reactors, including Canada's CANDU reactor fleet.
"This Notice of Allowance strengthens our intellectual property portfolio in Canada, a country with deep nuclear expertise and a fleet of CANDU reactors that could benefit from our innovative fuel technology," said Seth Grae, President and Chief Executive Officer of Lightbridge Corporation (搜索). "Canada's ongoing investments in life extensions for its existing CANDU reactors, as well as its growing interest in small modular reactors, make this an important potential market for Lightbridge Fuel (搜索)™."
European Patent for Multi-Zone Fuel Elements
The European Patent Office (搜索) issued a Notice of Allowance for European Patent Application No. 22777419.7, titled "Multi-Zone Fuel Element." The patent covers Lightbridge's proprietary nuclear fuel element design featuring multiple radial zones with variable thicknesses along the axial direction, enabling precise control of neutron flux distribution throughout the fuel element's operational lifetime.
The European allowance extends intellectual property protection across 39 contracting states, including the United Kingdom, France, Germany, and all major European nuclear markets. The patent covers fuel elements manufactured via additive manufacturing (3D printing), a process that enables production of complex multi-material zone architectures unachievable through conventional fuel fabrication techniques.
Technical Innovation and Manufacturing Capabilities
The allowed European claims are directed to a fuel element comprising three distinct radial zones of different materials: a first zone extending along the central axis, a second surrounding zone, and a third outermost zone. The thickness of both the second and third zones in the radial direction varies along the axial direction. The manufacturing method claims cover the use of additive manufacturing to produce this multi-zone architecture using metallic, ceramic, or cermet fuel systems.
The variable zone thickness along the axial direction enables engineers to tailor the radial and axial neutron flux profile within a single element, supporting optimization of reactor performance, safety margin management, and fissile material efficiency throughout the fuel cycle.
Strategic Market Positioning
"Receiving this allowance from the European Patent Office (搜索) is an important validation of the technical depth and novelty of Lightbridge Fuel (搜索)™," Grae commented. "Europe is home to a significant installed base of nuclear generating capacity, and the countries and utilities advancing nuclear energy as part of their clean energy programs represent a natural market for Lightbridge Fuel."
Lightbridge Corporation (搜索) is developing its proprietary next-generation nuclear fuel technology for existing light-water and pressurized heavy-water reactors, with the goal of significantly enhancing reactor safety, economics, and proliferation resistance. The company is also developing Lightbridge Fuel (搜索) for new small modular reactors to deliver the same benefits, plus load-following capabilities with renewables on zero-carbon electric grids.
The company has entered into two long-term framework agreements with Battelle Energy Alliance (搜索), LLC, the United States Department of Energy (搜索)'s operating contractor for Idaho National Laboratory (搜索). DOE's Gateway for Accelerated Innovation in Nuclear program has twice awarded Lightbridge to support the development of Lightbridge Fuel (搜索) over the past several years.
