Pioneering Treatment Process
The gene therapy (搜索) procedure involved a complex multi-step process spanning several months. Last year, stem cells were extracted from Cressy's bone marrow and sent to Europe for DNA editing. He then underwent chemotherapy to eliminate all existing bone marrow that produces sickle-shaped red blood cells. In March, his genetically modified cells were infused back into his system with the goal of producing normal, round red blood cells permanently.
"His blood system is starting to produce a new immune system. We are being able to detect that he's making this new hemoglobin. And so, he's really still in the recovery phase, but he's showing great promise so far," said Dr. Ben Watkins, director of the Stem Cell Transplant and Cellular Therapies Program at LCMC Health and Tulane (搜索) hematologist-oncologist.
Aviation Dreams Drive Treatment Decision
Cressy's motivation for pursuing this experimental treatment stemmed from his passion for aviation. The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) denied his pilot license application in 2023 due to his sickle cell condition. However, the denial letter provided a potential pathway forward, outlining that reconsideration could be granted if he submitted documentation showing he had undergone therapy converting sickle cell SS to sickle cell trait in the bone marrow.
"They left me with no other option," Cressy said. "So now we're here, being a part of history."
During his six-week hospital stay, Cressy maintained his aviation focus by setting up a flight simulator in his hospital room. "I was practicing instrument approaches and things like that, and also landings, getting my landing kind of perfect," he explained.
Treatment Challenges and Recovery
The intensive treatment regimen came with significant side effects. The chemotherapy process caused hair loss, changes in skin pigmentation, and painful mouth sores. Despite these challenges, Cressy remained optimistic about the outcome.
"Mentally, it's something that has me really excited right now that I just got cured of a disease I've lived with my whole life," Cressy said during his treatment. "I feel great right now, emotionally and physically."
Broader Impact and Future Plans
This gene therapy (搜索) treatment has been administered to fewer than 100 people worldwide, making Cressy's case particularly significant for the medical community. His journey has already inspired other sickle cell patients who were previously hesitant about the treatment to consider gene therapy as an option.
Following his discharge from the hospital after six weeks of monitoring, Cressy plans to submit documentation to the FAA for review of his pilot license application. He expects to know within a month whether the treatment was successful.
Beyond his aviation aspirations, Cressy is working on multiple projects to share his experience, including promoting his brand "Privileged Pilots" with friend Kyle Registre, who underwent the same procedure, and writing a book titled "Blessing in the Skies."
"Aviation is just the icing on the cake," Cressy reflected. "The big idea is we're making history, and we're paving a way for the new generation to come — inspiring with our stories and our ambitions to let everybody know that you can do anything as long as you put your mind to it."
