Addressing an Underdiagnosed Contributor to Dry Eye Disease
Lower lid laxity represents a highly prevalent yet often overlooked condition that can significantly impact ocular surface health. The condition may be associated with natural aging, sleep apnea, floppy lids, nocturnal lagophthalmos, and certain variations in orbital anatomy. Patients with eyelid laxity are more than twice as likely to develop severe ocular surface symptoms and signs of dry eye disease due to the lid's diminished ability to maintain proper tear film distribution, which can exacerbate dryness and inflammation.
Historically, treatment options for lower lid laxity have been limited to conservative approaches such as nighttime ointments, taping, and blinking exercises, or surgical correction in more advanced cases.
Clinical Study Results
The study enrolled 30 patients with lower lid laxity and moderate to severe dry eye disease who received four weekly DMSt treatments. Outcomes were assessed one month after the fourth treatment, revealing significant improvements across multiple parameters:

Technology and Mechanism of Action
The DMSt technology, which powers Lumenis (搜索)'s OptiLIFT (搜索) device introduced in early 2025, works by activating facial muscles with electrical impulses, tightening and toning the periorbital muscle to create improved eyelid function. The system includes radiofrequency components that deliver heat to skin layers to enhance collagen formation.
Study authors noted that DMSt may improve blood flow in addition to reducing lower lid laxity, potentially enhancing blinking efficiency and tear film stability. "Unlike two other technologies in this space – intense pulsed light and radiofrequency – this technology can help address deficits in eyelid position and movement, particularly useful for older patients or those with floppy or mispositioned eyelids," the researchers stated.

The researchers acknowledged several study limitations, including the lack of a control group, small sample size, modest follow-up duration, and qualitative assessment of some outcomes. They emphasized the need for further studies with larger sample sizes, longer follow-up periods, control groups, and quantitative measurements of blinking parameters to better evaluate this novel approach and understand its mechanism of action.
