During the expedition, the research team tracked heart rate, oxygen saturation, and symptoms of acute mountain sickness using the internationally established Lake Louise Score. The physiological measurements revealed striking changes as altitude increased. The partial pressure of oxygen in arterial blood — a key indicator of pulmonary oxygen uptake — dropped from 82 mmHg to 42 mmHg at base camp, situated at 4,350 meters. Blood oxygen saturation fell progressively with increasing altitude, reaching as low as 75 percent.
Despite these marked declines in oxygenation, the patient's acid-base balance remained stable and heart rate changed only slightly. Only mild to moderate symptoms of altitude sickness were recorded, and no severe altitude-related complications — such as high-altitude pulmonary edema or high-altitude cerebral edema — were observed.
Cautious Interpretation and Clinical Implications
The authors of the publication emphasize that these findings should not be generalized to all lung transplant patients. "The observations do, however, show that transplanted lungs can remain functionally adaptable even under conditions of extreme oxygen deprivation, provided this is done under controlled conditions and with careful medical supervision," said Jakob Mühlbacher from the Department of General Surgery at MedUni Vienna (搜索), who accompanied the expedition to the summit.
