MaineHealth Receives $2M to Establish Maine's First Clinical Research Unit at Biddeford Hospital

The unit will focus on common Maine conditions including oncology, cardiovascular disease, infectious disease, and mental health, featuring observation rooms for overnight stays and dedicated pharmacy services.
MaineHealth has secured $2 million in funding from the Maine Technology Institute (搜索) to establish Maine's first Clinical Research Unit (CRU), a dedicated 5,500-square-foot facility at Maine Medical Center Biddeford that will significantly expand patient access to clinical trials within the state.
The new research unit, scheduled to open in 2027, addresses a critical infrastructure gap that has historically limited Maine patients' participation in clinical trials. Previously, patients often had to travel to Boston to access certain research studies, particularly those testing new cancer drugs and other experimental treatments not yet approved for widespread use.
Expanding Patient Access and Research Capabilities
Jessica Chertow, MaineHealth's vice president of research, said the facility will serve 20-40 patients in its first year of operation, with plans for future expansion. The unit will be staffed by five to six nurses and will include observation rooms capable of accommodating overnight stays, a dedicated pharmacy, and easy access to laboratory work, imaging, and other diagnostic services.
"This is going to keep Maine patients closer to home," Chertow said. The facility will be compliant with both the Human Research Protection Program (HRPP) and Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) standards.
Dr. Scot Remick, director of oncology research and education at MaineHealth Institute for Research and co-principal investigator for the CRU project, explained that the dedicated space will support various research activities including blood sampling, electrocardiograms, long-term patient observations, and interviews.
"We may need to observe a patient for eight hours," Remick said. "You can't do these types of studies in a regular treatment space. It's too time consuming, so we needed a dedicated space."
Focus on Maine's Health Priorities
MaineHealth anticipates the CRU will concentrate its initial efforts on conditions common in Maine, exploring research opportunities in oncology, cardiovascular disease, infectious disease, and mental and behavioral health. The facility will accommodate both early- and late-phase clinical trials.
Dr. Doug Sawyer, MaineHealth's Chief Academic Officer and principal investigator for the CRU, emphasized the facility's potential impact on health equity. "We believe patients should have access to top-notch therapies no matter where they live, and this CRU has the potential to be a game-changer as we work to improve health equity for our patients in rural communities," Sawyer said.
Strategic Investment in Life Sciences Infrastructure
The funding represents part of Maine's broader strategy to develop its life sciences sector, advanced through the Maine Life Sciences Center (搜索) (MLSC), a statewide initiative housed within the Maine Technology Institute (搜索).
Sarah Delmar, MLSC's founding director, noted that Maine has historically lacked the infrastructure needed to support early-phase clinical trials. "This investment begins to change that. It's a critical step toward building the infrastructure Maine has been missing to fully support clinical research and bring new therapies closer to home," Delmar said.
Dr. Jens Rueter, Chief Medical Officer at The Jackson Laboratory, highlighted the facility's significance for cancer care advancement. "Cancer care is evolving quickly, and many of the most promising advances reach patients first through clinical trials," Rueter said. "MaineHealth's Clinical Research Unit will significantly enhance options for cancer patients here in Maine."
Educational and Research Benefits
The CRU will also serve as a training ground for early-career researchers, providing opportunities to design clinical trials and engage in clinical research. This educational component will benefit learners at MaineHealth and other Maine medical schools and nursing programs.
Karen L. Houseknecht, vice president of Research and Innovation at the University of New England, emphasized the facility's role in workforce development. "By connecting education, real-world clinical research, and patient care, the CRU gives trainees a direct role in meaningful clinical studies while also expanding patient access to cutting-edge clinical care in Maine and the region," Houseknecht said.
The project is scheduled to begin construction no later than December, with patient care services expected to commence in 2027. The investment represents one of several targeted efforts to strengthen Maine's life sciences ecosystem by expanding critical infrastructure and enabling new opportunities for research, care, and innovation across the state.
