Mattel Launches First Type 1 Diabetes Barbie Doll with Medical Device Accessories
核心洞察
Mattel (搜索) has released its first Barbie doll with type 1 diabetes (搜索), featuring a continuous glucose monitor and insulin pump modeled on Insulet (搜索)'s Omnipod 5 (搜索) system.
The doll debuted at the Breakthrough T1D (搜索) Children's Congress in Washington, D.C., as part of efforts to help children with diabetes feel represented in popular culture.
Special edition versions celebrate type 1 diabetes (搜索) advocates Robin Arzón and Lila Moss, with the regular doll wearing blue polka dots to represent diabetes awareness.
Mattel (搜索) has launched its first Barbie doll with type 1 diabetes (搜索), complete with medical device accessories including a continuous glucose monitor and insulin pump, marking a significant step in inclusive toy representation for children with chronic health conditions.
The doll made its debut on July 8 during the Breakthrough T1D (搜索) Children's Congress in Washington, D.C., a three-day event where 170 young people with type 1 diabetes (搜索) met with lawmakers to advocate for continued funding of the Special Diabetes Program.
Medical Device Integration
The new Barbie features a continuous glucose monitor on her arm, secured with heart-shaped pink tape, and an insulin pump positioned at her waist. The medical devices are modeled on Insulet (搜索)'s Omnipod 5 (搜索) system. Her smartphone displays blood sugar levels through an app, showing a reading of 130 mg/dL—a healthy blood sugar level based on real data from Emily Mazreku, a Breakthrough T1D (搜索) staff member who helped design the doll.
Mazreku, who lives with type 1 diabetes (搜索), spent nearly two years working on the doll's design. "Mattel (搜索) approached us, and they wanted this to be a part of their Fashionista line," Mazreku said. "And we jumped on that opportunity right away."
Design and Symbolism
The regular version of the doll wears a blue polka dot top and matching skirt, with the blue color representing global symbols for diabetes awareness. Her matching purse is designed to hold diabetes supplies and snacks, reflecting the daily reality of managing the condition.
Special one-off versions celebrate two type 1 diabetes (搜索) advocates: fitness instructor Robin Arzón in the US and model Lila Moss in the UK. Moss, daughter of supermodel Kate Moss, is known for wearing her diabetes devices on red carpets.
"I am proud to use my platform to educate around type 1 diabetes (搜索) and show that being different is cool," Moss said. "To be able to now see Barbie dolls with T1D, and to receive a Barbie doll that visibly looks like me even wearing her patches, is both surreal and special."
Addressing Representation Gap
The launch addresses a significant representation gap identified in recent research. An Insulet (搜索)-commissioned survey found that while 94% of people with type 1 diabetes (搜索) want to see themselves represented in culture, more than half (51%) say they rarely do.
Type 1 diabetes (搜索) is an autoimmune disease that typically starts in childhood, occurring when the body's immune system attacks the pancreas (搜索), which produces insulin. Without sufficient insulin, people must take daily injections or use an insulin pump to maintain their health.
Educational Impact
The doll joins Mattel (搜索)'s Fashionista line, which now includes more than 175 dolls representing different body types, skin tones, and conditions, including versions with vitiligo, prosthetic legs, hearing aids, and canes.
Sian Jones, co-founder of the Toy Box Diversity Lab in Scotland, who studies how inclusive toys can reduce inequality, explained the educational value: "Barbie in a wheelchair cannot use the doll's house in their kindergarten classroom, so they have to build a ramp in order for her to be able to access the door to their doll's house, for example."
For Mazreku, the project held personal significance when she brought the doll home to her 3-year-old daughter, who doesn't have type 1 diabetes (搜索). "She looked at me and she said, 'She looks like Mommy.' And that was so special for me," Mazreku said.
Industry Support
In association with the launch, Mattel (搜索)'s UK subsidiary is donating £20,000 to Breakthrough T1D (搜索), with Insulet (搜索) matching that amount. This collaboration reflects broader industry efforts to raise awareness of type 1 diabetes (搜索) through creative initiatives, including Insulet's recent partnership with Marvel for a custom comic strip featuring a superhero with the disease.
