Medicenna Secures Five New Patents for IL-2 and IL-4 Superkine Immunotherapies
核心洞察
Medicenna Therapeutics (搜索) has been granted five patents covering its IL-2 and IL-4 (搜索) Superkine platforms, strengthening intellectual property protection across major global markets with expiration dates ranging from 2033 to 2040.
The patents provide broad coverage for composition, formulation, and therapeutic applications, including protection for MDNA11 in combination with checkpoint inhibitors and a novel formulation of bizaxofusp for brain cancer (搜索) treatment.
The company's global IP portfolio now comprises 86 granted or allowed patents, supporting its clinical pipeline including the ongoing Phase 1/2 ABILITY-1 study for MDNA11 and Phase 2b trial for bizaxofusp in recurrent glioblastoma (搜索).
Medicenna Therapeutics (搜索) Corp. has secured five new patents covering its IL-2 and IL-4 (搜索) Superkine platforms, significantly strengthening the company's intellectual property position across key global markets. The clinical-stage immunotherapy company announced the patent grants provide broad composition, formulation, and method of use protection with anticipated expiration dates ranging from 2033 to 2040.
Patent Portfolio Expansion
The newly granted patents span major markets including the United States, Europe, Australia, Japan, China, and India. The five patents cover diverse aspects of Medicenna's Superkine technology:
U.S. Patent No. 12,338,269 B2 protects IL-2 superagonists in combination with anti-PD-1 (搜索) antibodies, with additional grants in Australia and Japan and allowances in Canada. This patent provides crucial coverage for MDNA11, currently being evaluated in the ongoing Phase 1/2 ABILITY-1 study.
U.S. Patent No. 12,274,735 covers IL-4 (搜索) fusion formulation for treatment of CNS tumors (搜索), with parallel protection granted in Switzerland, Germany, France, and the United Kingdom. This patent solidifies commercial exclusivity for bizaxofusp (MDNA55) in brain cancer (搜索) treatment.
Three additional patents include methods for producing Th9 T cells (in-licensed from Stanford (搜索)), superagonists and antagonists of IL-2 (also from Stanford), and IL-4 (搜索) receptor-binding fusion proteins (co-owned with NIH).
Clinical and Commercial Implications
"These newly granted and allowed patents not only expand the breadth and depth of our intellectual property portfolio but also enhance the long-term commercial potential of our Superkine programs," said Fahar Merchant, Ph.D., President and CEO of Medicenna.
The patent covering IL-2 superagonists in combination with anti-PD1 antibodies reinforces both the clinical rationale and commercial potential for MDNA11. The protection for bizaxofusp's novel formulation strengthens the asset's commercial exclusivity as Medicenna pursues potential partnering for this Phase 3-ready program.
Superkine Technology Platform
Medicenna's technology focuses on developing highly selective versions of IL-2, IL-4 (搜索), and IL-13 Superkines. The company's long-acting IL-2 Superkine, MDNA11, demonstrates superior affinity toward CD122 (搜索) (IL-2 receptor beta) with no CD25 (搜索) (IL-2 receptor alpha) binding, preferentially stimulating cancer-killing effector T cells and NK cells.
Bizaxofusp, the company's IL-4 (搜索) Empowered Superkine, has been studied in five clinical trials enrolling over 130 patients, including a Phase 2b trial for recurrent glioblastoma (搜索). The therapy has obtained FastTrack and Orphan Drug status from the FDA and FDA/EMA, respectively.
Expanded IP Portfolio
With these new grants, Medicenna's global intellectual property portfolio now comprises 86 granted or allowed patents, supporting a robust and diverse clinical pipeline. The company expects to share additional clinical data from the ABILITY-1 clinical trial during the remainder of 2025.
The patent protection extends across Medicenna's broader platform, including early-stage MDNA209 IL-2β biased IL-2/IL-15 Super-antagonists for autoimmune and graft-versus-host diseases, BiSKITs (Bifunctional SuperKine ImmunoTherapies), and T-MASK (Targeted Metalloprotease Activated SuperKine) programs designed to treat immunologically "cold" tumors.
