South Korean stem cell therapy company Medipost (搜索) (078160.KQ) has recruited Min Ho-sung, a former Samsung Biologics executive vice president, as its new president to strengthen its global business, the company announced on September 2. Min is expected to be formally appointed as chief executive officer following an extraordinary shareholders' meeting and a board resolution, establishing a co-CEO structure alongside incumbent CEO Oh Won-il. Min is also expected to serve as chairman of the board.
Min is a specialist in research and development, business development, and contract development and manufacturing organization (CDMO) operations. He earned a bachelor's degree in molecular biology from the University of California, Berkeley, and a doctorate in molecular biology from UCLA. After working as a researcher at global drugmaker Amgen, Min served as a principal researcher at Samsung Advanced Institute of Technology and as head of the drug substance division at Samsung Bioepis. He later served as chief executive of GenScript and then as head of the CDMO development center at Samsung Biologics, where he was at one point mentioned as a potential successor to Chief Executive John Rim.
A Co-CEO Structure for Domestic and Global Focus
Medipost (搜索) plans to shift to a co-chief executive structure to strengthen expertise in both domestic and global operations. Incumbent Chief Executive Oh Won-il will oversee domestic businesses, including Cartistem, the GMP center, cord blood, health functional foods, and the SCT division. Min will oversee the global business division, the U.S. and Japan subsidiaries, and CDMO affiliate OmniaBio (搜索). He will also take charge of global commercialization strategy, including global clinical trials and overseas business development.
"Bringing in President Min will be an important momentum for Medipost (搜索) as it grows into a global biotech company," a Medipost official said. "Through the co-chief executive structure, we will build a fast and efficient management environment and maximize the global value of key pipelines such as Cartistem."
Cartistem's Global Clinical Milestones
Medipost (搜索) plans to accelerate Cartistem's global expansion based on Min's global network and expertise in R&D and CDMO commercialization. Cartistem is an allogeneic umbilical cord blood-derived stem cell therapy for osteoarthritis (搜索) approved in South Korea, and is currently being tested for global blockbuster potential through Phase 3 trials in Japan and the United States.
In Japan, the Phase 3 trial met both primary and secondary endpoints, and a Biologics License Application (BLA) is being prepared. In the United States, a Phase 3 trial using a single-study approach has received approval and patient dosing has begun. This approach can reduce costs by approximately 20-30% and shorten the clinical timeline by 3-6 months compared to the original development plan. The total clinical period is expected to be approximately 42-45 months.
Min outlined his priorities for the role. "I will ensure key milestones including the Japan BLA submission and U.S. clinical trials are achieved without disruption, and will combine global business development with OmniaBio (搜索)'s capabilities," Min said. "We will expand commercialization beyond North America and Japan to Europe and China."
Leveraging CDMO Synergies
Min plans to establish commercialization strategies for Cartistem following its launch in North America and Japan, while pursuing global business development in conjunction with OmniaBio (搜索). OmniaBio is Medipost (搜索)'s CDMO affiliate with contract manufacturing capabilities for cell and gene therapies. The combination of Min's CDMO experience and OmniaBio's production infrastructure is expected to create synergies in building Cartistem's overseas supply chain and expanding local partnerships.
This appointment is notable as it comes at a stage when South Korean stem cell therapy companies are accelerating their entry into overseas markets. The recruitment of a global expert from Samsung Biologics to the top executive ranks is interpreted as a strategic move to simultaneously prepare for overseas clinical completion and commercialization.
