The restructuring, reported on July 19, 2026, affects the Jerusalem Electronics Center—established through the 2015 acquisition of Qlight Nanotech (搜索)—and the Life Sciences Center R&D operations in Rehovot, which originated from the 2014 Sigma-Aldrich acquisition.
The Interlab drug development facility in Yavne, a site with deep historical roots in Merck's Israeli operations, will undergo a more nuanced transformation. While the site will initially see workforce reductions, the company plans to subsequently recruit new personnel focused on more innovative areas of drug development that align with Israel's comparative advantages, including artificial intelligence-driven drug development.
"Merck is committed to Israel and will remain here," the company stated. "We are downsizing in some areas, as part of a global strategic shift, and intend to expand activity in some other areas, in order to be more customer-oriented and better utilize the advantages of the Israeli ecosystem, in all three of our areas of activity—life sciences, biotech and electronics."
No changes have been reported at Versum Materials in Kiryat Gat, suggesting the restructuring is targeted rather than across-the-board.
A Longstanding Israeli Footprint
Merck's engagement with Israel dates back to the 1970s, initially through marketing operations. The company's deeper involvement in Israeli drug development began in the 1990s with Rebif, a multiple sclerosis (搜索) therapy developed by the Weizmann Institute of Science in collaboration with Serono (搜索). Following Merck's acquisition of Serono, the company established the Interlab R&D center in Yavne during the early 2000s, cementing its drug development presence in the country.
Today, Merck operates across three divisions: biological drugs, chemical drugs, and materials. The Materials Division expanded its Israeli footprint in 2019 with the acquisition of Jerusalem-based Qlight, a nanotechnology startup. The 2014 acquisition of Sigma-Aldrich Corporation (搜索) brought the Rehovot operations under Merck's umbrella. As of 2023, Merck employed approximately 450 people across its Israeli sites.
The current restructuring reflects Merck's broader effort to reorient its global operations toward higher-growth, technology-intensive domains, with AI-enabled drug development emerging as a particular priority for the Yavne site's future direction.
