Midjourney Enters Medicine with Full-Body Ultrasound Scanner, Betting on Data Over Diagnostics

The announcement, made onstage in San Francisco, marks the company's first foray into physical hardware — and into medicine.
The scanner is not, however, an AI-powered diagnostic device. Holz was candid that the machine is "not even using any AI in this yet, just really cool hardware and software." That admission reveals the true architecture of Midjourney's medical ambition: the artificial intelligence lives not in the machine itself, but in what the company plans to do with the data it collects.
How the Technology Works
The device relies on ultrasound computed tomography (USCT), a technique studied since the 1950s that recently earned FDA clearance for breast cancer screening. Rather than a handheld probe, a ring of transducers surrounds the body underwater and fires sound waves from every angle simultaneously, reconstructing a full three-dimensional volume from the returning echoes.
A user steps onto a platform that lowers into a shallow pool at approximately five centimeters per second. As the person descends, the ring images the body slice by slice. Midjourney says the finished scan will eventually take 60 seconds and produce a sub-millimeter map that "looks a lot like today's MRIs," all without the radiation of CT scans or the heavy magnets required by MRI.
The Butterfly Network Partnership
Midjourney is not building this technology from scratch. According to a securities filing from November 2025, the company signed an exclusive co-development and licensing deal with Butterfly Network, the publicly traded maker of ultrasound-on-a-chip technology. The terms include a $15 million upfront payment and roughly $10 million per year over a five-year term, with milestone and revenue-sharing payments that could push the total toward $74 million.
This partnership reframes the announcement considerably. Midjourney is licensing a proven semiconductor platform and wrapping it in a consumer experience — making this as much a marketing and distribution challenge as a physics one.
The Gap Between Promise and Prototype
The current prototype reportedly takes about 20 minutes per scan, not the promised 60 seconds. It has been tested on roughly a dozen people and is being built by a team of about nine, led by Ahmad Abbas, who joined Midjourney in 2023 after working on hardware for Apple's Vision Pro.
The 60-second target is gated by how fast data can move from the transducers to the compute cluster — the system generates approximately 17 gigabytes of raw acoustic data per second. The company's own timeline points to a custom-silicon third-generation scanner around 2028 before the experience matches the pitch.
A behind-the-scenes video released by the company, hosted by tech YouTuber and Midjourney engineer Marcin Plaza, showed more of the hardware and the team building it. Plaza frankly described the scanner as scores of ultrasound probes "hacked apart and slapped on a glorified hot tub with an elevator in it," connected to off-the-shelf computers and Raspberry Pis. The video largely glossed over the physics and imaging questions that experts raised when the project was first announced.
Those experts told The Verge that Midjourney had shown little evidence it could overcome the well-known limits of ultrasound or generate the kind of detailed images suggested at the scale and speed promised.
The Spa Strategy: Wellness, Not Diagnostics
Perhaps the most strategically clever element of the announcement is the venue. Midjourney is not opening clinics. It is opening a roughly 25,000-square-foot "Midjourney Spa" near Union Square in San Francisco at the end of 2027, featuring hot tubs, saunas, cold plunges, and ten scanners running 24 hours a day.
By selling "body composition maps" inside a wellness destination, the company stays within the FDA's general wellness lane, which permits non-invasive measurement devices that make no disease claims to operate without full medical clearance. Head of medical Tom Calloway said in the behind-the-scenes video that the focus on body composition would let the company "speedrun" and open right away once testing is complete. The Real Product: A Billion Scans a Month
Midjourney's long-range vision reveals the true ambition. The company wants more than 50,000 scanners worldwide and the capacity for a billion scans a month by 2031. A longitudinal, full-body imaging dataset of that magnitude is precisely the raw material needed to train AI models to spot abnormalities in asymptomatic individuals before symptoms manifest.
This ambition, however, runs into a well-documented clinical problem. Whole-body screening of asymptomatic people turns up incidental findings in 20% to 40% of scans, yet only a small fraction ever require treatment, as University of Michigan radiologists have noted. At a billion scans a month, even modest rates would imply hundreds of millions of ambiguous results annually, each demanding a clinical decision and producing a worried consumer.
Midjourney's announcement claims that enough early imaging could help the world avoid 30% of deaths and half of all healthcare costs. No peer-reviewed evidence was offered for either figure.
Independence as Both Asset and Risk
Midjourney has no outside investors and calls itself a community-backed research lab. Holz emphasized that this independence gives the company unusual freedom: "No one can tell me not to do it." The company says it can fund the first spa on its own.
That independence is genuinely unusual in the capital-intensive world of medical device development, but it also means the discipline must come from elsewhere — from regulators, from radiologists, and from whether anyone actually shows up to be scanned. The scoreboard for this venture will not be a launch video. It will be FDA submissions, scan volume, and the first independent radiologist willing to say the images are as good as the company claims.
