FDA Clearance Enables Fully Robotic Microsurgery

Panetta, Chair of the Department of Plastic Surgery at the University of South Florida Morsani College of Medicine and Chief of the Plastic Surgery Institute at Tampa General Hospital, performed the procedure using the complete NanoWrist Instrument Portfolio. "Robotics will define the future of microsurgery, especially in lymphedema work where sub-millimeter precision is essential," Dr. Panetta stated. "With robotic enabled dissection, I was able to complete a fully robotic LVB, from incision to closure, with unmatched precision, control and improved ergonomics."
New CPT Code Addresses Reimbursement Barriers
In parallel with the FDA clearance, the American Medical Association issued a new Category III CPT code (1019T) for lymphovenous bypass procedures, including robotic assistance. The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services also finalized payment rates for LVB procedures performed in outpatient settings, to be reflected in the CY 2026 OPPS Final Rule. The new code becomes effective January 1, 2026.
Previously, lymphovenous bypass procedures required billing under unlisted surgical codes, creating reimbursement challenges that limited adoption. The new CPT code is designed to capture both manual and robotic-assisted lymphovenous bypass surgeries while enabling procedure data collection to advance reimbursement pathways.
