New National Guidelines Developed to Improve Sepsis Care
核心洞察
Experts convened by the Infectious Diseases Society of America (搜索) and seven other professional groups published a multisociety position paper on hospital strategies to improve sepsis (搜索) outcomes.
The guidelines cover diagnostic testing and pathogen detection, antimicrobial management, infection prevention and surveillance, performance measurement, and hospital infrastructure and organizational support.
The authors flag next-generation diagnostics and artificial intelligence-enhanced clinical decision support as emerging technologies that require further validation before widespread hospital deployment.
A multisociety position paper published in Clinical Infectious Diseases outlines new national guidelines intended to standardize and strengthen hospital practices for patients who develop sepsis (搜索), a condition that kills at least 350,000 Americans each year. The work was assembled on behalf of the Infectious Diseases Society of America (搜索) and seven other professional groups, with Taison Bell, MD, MBA, interim chair of UVA Health (搜索)'s Department of Medicine, among the lead national experts involved.
The recommendations span diagnostic testing and pathogen detection, antimicrobial management, infection prevention and surveillance, performance measurement, and hospital infrastructure and organizational support. The stated aim is to make high-quality sepsis (搜索) care more consistent and reliable by strengthening the systems behind diagnosis, treatment, prevention and quality improvement. Sepsis remains a leading cause of serious illness and death despite decades of efforts to improve recognition and treatment, and occurs when the immune response to an infection spirals out of control, potentially leading to organ failure and death.
The paper also highlights emerging technologies with the potential to improve sepsis (搜索) care, including next-generation diagnostics and artificial intelligence-enhanced clinical decision support, while cautioning that these tools need further validation before broad hospital deployment. Contributing organizations include the American College of Emergency Physicians (搜索), American Society for Microbiology, American Thoracic Society, Pediatric Infectious Diseases Society, Society of Critical Care Medicine (搜索), Society for Healthcare Epidemiology of America, Society of Hospital Medicine, Society of Infectious Diseases Pharmacists and Sepsis Alliance (搜索).
