The National Institute for Pharmaceutical Research and Development (搜索) (NIPRD) and the Federal University Teaching Hospital, Lafia (FUTHL) have signed a strategic Memorandum of Understanding to accelerate vaccine and drug research, development, and clinical trials in Nigeria. The agreement, formalized in Abuja under the oversight of Coordinating Minister of Health and Social Welfare Prof. Muhammad Pate, represents a significant step toward addressing Africa's pharmaceutical manufacturing deficit.
Addressing Critical Manufacturing Gaps
FUTHL Chief Medical Director Dr. Ikrama Hassan emphasized the urgency of the partnership, noting that Africa currently produces "less than 10 per cent of the vaccines (搜索) and drugs that we need on the continent." The COVID-19 (搜索) pandemic exposed these vulnerabilities and highlighted the critical need for resilient research and manufacturing systems for vaccines and pharmaceuticals.
"We want to leverage the advantage that NIPRD has already developed so that in no distant time, we should make Nigeria one of the hubs, if not the most important hub, for research on vaccines (搜索) and drugs," Hassan stated.
The collaboration will involve at least 200 hospital staff in research activities, with a focus on developing active pharmaceutical ingredients (搜索) (APIs) locally. This approach would enable Nigeria to own intellectual property for rapid responses during future health emergencies.
International Partnerships and Training Opportunities
NIPRD Director-General Dr. Obi Adigwe revealed that the institute has secured an 18 million pounds agreement with the European Union (搜索), representing Africa's largest R&D initiative. Under the new MoU, FUTHL will automatically benefit from upcoming training programs, including secured slots for 50 to 100 Nigerian scientists at Stanford University in February 2026.
"The selection process will be published and thousands will compete, but with this MoU, this organisation automatically has secured slots," Adigwe explained.
Implementation of the agreement will begin immediately, with quarterly progress updates provided to the minister.
Clinical Trials and Research Expansion
The partnership will strengthen clinical trials capacity, building on NIPRD's leadership in Nigeria's first fractional dosing COVID-19 (搜索) vaccine trial, which will now extend to FUTHL. Minister Pate noted that "NIPRD has the expertise as a centre of excellence, while FUTH Lafia, in addition to providing expertise across various fields, would also provide the study participants and laboratory services needed for research trials."

The agreement includes plans to advance phytomedicine research, leveraging Nasarawa State's rich plant resources with ethnomedicinal value. This initiative has potential to generate income for women and youth while contributing to pharmaceutical innovation.
Adigwe emphasized the commercial potential of the partnership, stating: "As interventions come from the partnership, there is a pipeline for them to be commercialised to earn revenue not only for Nigeria, but for the scientists and researchers involved."
The collaboration combines Adigwe's private-sector experience with Hassan's leadership in transitioning FUTHL from state to federal control, creating aligned priorities and commercialization pathways for research outputs.
