The Minister of State for Health and Social Welfare, Dr. Adekunle Salako, instructed the National Institute for Pharmaceutical Research and Development (搜索) (NIPRD), the Nigerian Institute of Medical Research (NIMR), and the National Institute for Cancer Research and Treatment (搜索) (NICRAT) to take the lead in supporting the initiative during a virtual meeting with institute leadership and the Centre for Advanced Medical Research and Training (搜索) (CAMRET).
Promising Laboratory Results
Dr. Amina Jega, CAMRET team lead, presented research findings showing that an active compound derived from a plant native to northwestern Nigeria demonstrated significant anti-cancer activity. Laboratory tests revealed that the extract destroyed brain cancer (搜索) cell lines within 48 hours at a specific dosage.
The research primarily targets glioblastoma multiforme (搜索), one of the most aggressive forms of brain cancer (搜索). According to Dr. Jega, patients with this condition survive an average of only 15 months due to poor drug response, highlighting the critical need for new treatment options.
Beyond brain cancer (搜索), the compound is being tested against multiple cancer types, including breast, liver, colon, cervical, leukemia (搜索), and lung cancers, with early results showing encouraging outcomes across these different malignancies.
Government Commitment and Strategic Vision
Dr. Salako described the discovery as "a potential game-changer for Nigeria's health system and a major step towards realising President Bola Ahmed Tinubu's health sector transformation goals." The minister emphasized that the development reinforces the need to strengthen Nigeria's phytomedicine industry as part of efforts to unlock the healthcare value chain.
"The phytomedicine sector must be prioritised in unlocking Nigeria's healthcare value chain. A committee has already been established to bring together investors, research institutions, and stakeholders to accelerate development in the pharmaceutical sector," Dr. Salako stated.
Institutional Response and Collaboration
The response from research institutions has been immediate and comprehensive. Prof. Usman Aliyu, Director General of NICRAT, confirmed that his institute had already reached out to the researchers and would provide necessary institutional support. "As soon as the Minister received word of the discovery, he asked us to make contact with the researchers. NICRAT is committed to supporting this initiative in every possible way," Prof. Aliyu said.
NIPRD's Director General, Dr. Obi Adigwe, announced that the Minister approved the inclusion of a CAMRET representative in a federal delegation scheduled to attend specialized biomedical training in China in early 2026. Additionally, Stanford University will host a boot camp on translational research in Nigeria in February 2026, where a member of the research team will also participate.
Prof. John Obafunwa, Director General of NIMR, expressed strong interest in partnering with CAMRET on clinical studies and further analysis of the extract's efficacy in human trials. "If this research can extend brain cancer (搜索) survival rates beyond the current 12 to 15 months, it will mark a major advancement," Prof. Obafunwa noted.
Next Steps and Development Timeline
The Minister has requested that the CAMRET team present a detailed proposal to the Ministry outlining specific requirements for advancing the research. Dr. Salako pledged the Federal Government's continued support for further research and development, urging the scientists to sustain momentum until the discovery yields a product that benefits Nigerian patients.
A ministerial committee has been established to coordinate collaboration among researchers, investors, and industry partners to accelerate pharmaceutical innovation and ensure Nigeria's participation in global medical breakthroughs.
