The center features the state-of-the-art Feinstein Family Human Neuropsychopharmacology Laboratory, designed to bring rigorous scientific scrutiny to compounds that have increasingly entered public conversations about mental health care.
Innovative Research Infrastructure
The laboratory includes unique features such as a driving simulator and modular bar and living room spaces intended to mirror real-world social environments. These specialized settings allow researchers to observe how psychedelic substances affect behavior, decision-making and functioning outside traditional clinical settings, providing crucial data on both therapeutic potential and potential impairing effects.
Led by behavioral health researchers Dr. John Kane and Dr. Nehal Vadhan, the CPRT will oversee and conduct research across Northwell Health's 28-hospital system and its diverse patient population. The facility was built with philanthropic support from the Feinstein Health Fund, along with backing from the Feinstein Institutes (搜索) and Northwell's Department of Psychiatry.
Targeted Research Programs

The laboratory is designed for the safe, ethical and comprehensive assessment of the direct and long-term effects of psychedelics and other psychoactive drugs, including Δ9-THC (cannabis), psilocybin (mushrooms), MDMA (ecstasy) and ketamine. The center will also function as a hub for education, collaboration and support, with the aim of increasing public understanding as regulatory approvals for psychedelic-based treatments are pursued.

Future Expansion Plans
Within five years, the center plans to complete its initial research, move into larger studies supported by federal funding, and launch a clinical treatment program. Long-term goals include expanding the facility, establishing satellite programs across Northwell campuses, hiring basic researchers to develop new therapeutics, and hosting regional and national conferences to further psychedelic science.
The initiative addresses a pressing scientific and public need focused on understanding both the therapeutic potential and potential risks of psychedelic compounds for patients suffering from conditions in desperate need of effective therapies. For environmental considerations and to preserve funds for study costs, much of the lab equipment, furniture and decor has been repurposed or donated from surplus.
