Northwest Biotherapeutics (NWBio), a Maryland-based biotechnology company developing DCVax personalized immune therapies for solid tumor cancers, announced on August 6, 2026 that it has entered into a non-binding Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the Saudi Pharmaceutical Industries and Medical Appliance Company (SPIMACO). The collaboration aims to bring NWBio's lead product, DCVax-L, to Saudi Arabia for the treatment of glioblastoma (搜索) brain cancer.
SPIMACO, established in 1986, is one of the largest pharmaceutical companies in Saudi Arabia and holds a leadership position across 21 markets in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region. The company has been expanding its capabilities in specialty pharmaceuticals and biopharmaceuticals through strategic partnerships and continuous investment in research, technology, and advanced manufacturing.
Framework of the Collaboration
The MOU establishes a general framework for discussions regarding the approval, commercialization, supply, and technology transfer of DCVax-L for glioblastoma (搜索) in Saudi Arabia. Under the proposed structure, the collaboration would operate on a revenue-sharing model. SPIMACO would be responsible for interfacing with the Saudi Food and Drug Authority (SFDA), including the application for regulatory approval of DCVax-L for glioblastoma, and would serve as NWBio's commercial partner for marketing, sales, and distribution.
NWBio will provide the data and documentation required for regulatory purposes, offer scientific support, and produce and supply the DCVax-L products. The company retains all ownership of all intellectual property. Over time, the collaboration may expand by mutual agreement to include DCVax-L products for indications beyond brain cancer and may extend to additional territories, such as Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries.
Technology Transfer and Localized Manufacturing
A key component of the MOU is the recognition that localization and technology transfer are central to the contemplated partnership. Saudi Arabia, under its Vision 2030 national plan, is positioning itself as a regional and global hub for life sciences and biotechnology. The MOU provides for the parties to negotiate a license and technology transfer arrangement that would enable localized manufacturing of DCVax-L in Saudi Arabia, with separate agreements to be negotiated for that stage.

DCVax-L: A Personalized Immunotherapy for Glioblastoma (搜索)
DCVax-L is a dendritic cell-based personalized vaccine designed to treat cancers more effectively than current treatments, without the toxicities associated with chemotherapies, and on a cost-effective basis. Glioblastoma (搜索) (GBM), the lead indication, is the most aggressive and lethal form of primary brain cancer and is classified as an orphan disease.
NWBio has completed a 331-patient Phase III trial of DCVax-L for GBM, presented the results at scientific meetings, and published the findings in JAMA Oncology. A Marketing Authorization Application (MAA) for commercial approval has been submitted in the United Kingdom and is currently undergoing review. Beyond GBM, the company has developed DCVax-Direct for inoperable solid tumor cancers, having completed a 40-patient Phase I trial with plans to pursue Phase II trials this year. NWBio previously conducted a Phase I/II trial with DCVax-L for advanced ovarian cancer in collaboration with the University of Pennsylvania.
The MOU remains non-binding, and the execution of definitive agreements is subject to further negotiation between the parties. The announcement underscores the growing international interest in personalized cancer immunotherapies and the expanding role of the MENA region in the global biopharmaceutical landscape.
