Novartis is cutting up to 130 jobs in Basel by the end of 2027, the pharmaceutical company announced on Wednesday, as it discontinues small-scale production of biologics in the Kleinbasel district. The decision reflects the company's ongoing restructuring of its biologics manufacturing footprint and its broader strategy of focusing more strongly on the development and production of innovative medicines.
Production Shutdown and Relocation
According to the company, other biologics manufacturing sites around the world will take over the Basel plant's operations in the future. The production shutdown stems from the expiration of individual lease agreements at the Kleinbasel site. As a result, additional operations will be relocated from the Kleinbasel district to the Novartis Campus on the other side of the Rhine. These relocated activities include laboratories for biological cell banks, analytical testing procedures, and technical development activities.
A New Center for Biologics Development
The move represents the next step in previously announced plans to establish a new center for the technical development of biologics on campus. This center is intended to complement the existing research center for biologics, consolidating Novartis's technical development capabilities in a single location.

All planned changes are subject to the information and consultation process. Novartis has stated its commitment to supporting affected employees with a range of offerings, including a long-standing social plan.
Broader Restructuring Context
The Basel announcement follows a related strategic move in Austria, where Novartis sold its site in Tyrol to a German company, Innexis (搜索), which specializes in operating pharmaceutical and life sciences infrastructure. Under that agreement, signed on July 8, Novartis retains ownership of the research and production facilities as well as the laboratory equipment at the site, while Innexis takes over management of the 264,000-square-meter "Life Science Campus," including buildings, infrastructure, and services. The handover is scheduled for January 1, 2027.
Novartis executives stated that these moves continue the strategy of "focusing even more strongly on the development and production of innovative medicines." For the majority of the approximately 850 employees at the Kundl site, nothing will change as a result of the takeover, as Novartis will continue to operate its core activities on the campus. However, 30 employees from campus management are planned to transfer to the Innexis (搜索) Group, retaining the same duties and responsibilities. Novartis currently employs approximately 3,300 people in Austria.
