The facility, operated by industry partner Aurora Biosynthetics (搜索), represents the country's only comprehensive site capable of producing a wide range of RNA therapeutics (搜索) under one roof.
The completion comes as the COVID-19 (搜索) pandemic highlighted critical vulnerabilities in global supply chains and the urgent need for domestic manufacturing capability. With international supply limited during the pandemic, the new facility ensures NSW is better prepared for future health emergencies by enabling rapid production of RNA vaccines and treatments when needed most.
Comprehensive RNA Manufacturing Hub
Located within the Macquarie University Innovation Precinct, the facility includes advanced laboratories and support spaces designed to translate, develop and manufacture life-saving RNA therapeutics (搜索). The applications extend beyond vaccines to encompass treatments for cancers and rare genetic diseases (搜索), as well as pest-control solutions for agricultural use.
The NSW Government has committed substantial ongoing support, planning to provide an additional $119 million over 10 years for RNA R&D projects at the facility. This builds on previous investments including the $17.6 million NSW RNA Research and Training Network launched in July last year and the $6 million RNA Pipeline Grants Program.
Minister for Health and Regional Health Ryan Park emphasized the facility's significance: "This a major step forward for the future of healthcare in NSW and an opportunity for us to develop and deploy new advanced health therapies. This facility is an exciting new link between NSW's world-class RNA researchers, our outstanding clinical trials capability and the health system."
University of Sydney Spinout Advances TB Vaccine Development
Complementing the state's RNA infrastructure development, University of Sydney researchers have established Vaxosome Pty Ltd (搜索), a biotechnology company that has secured funding through the NSW Government's RNA Pipeline Grant program. The spinout is developing a multiplexed mRNA vaccine platform specifically targeting tuberculosis (搜索), one of the world's leading infectious disease killers.
The Vaxosome platform packages multiple TB antigens into a single lipid nanoparticle, enabling the immune system to recognize several components of the pathogen simultaneously. This approach builds on years of research conducted at the University of Sydney and its affiliated institutes, including the Centenary Institute, along with collaborative work with researchers at the Monash Institute of Pharmaceutical Sciences.
Co-founder Professor Jamie Triccas, Deputy Director of Sydney Infectious Diseases Institute, described the funding as "an important step in translating academic discovery into a biotechnology venture capable of developing globally relevant vaccines."
Addressing Global Health Challenges
The tuberculosis (搜索) vaccine development addresses a critical global health need. Tuberculosis infects more than 10 million people each year and causes over 1.3 million deaths globally. Despite the widespread use of the BCG vaccine for a century, more effective vaccines are urgently needed.
Professor John Prins, Dean of the Faculty of Medicine and Health at the University of Sydney, highlighted the broader significance: "Vaxosome demonstrates how fundamental discovery research conducted at the University of Sydney can translate into real-world solutions for major global health challenges."
Strategic Industry Partnerships
The RNA facility's operation involves key industry partnerships, with Aurora Biosynthetics (搜索) serving as the operator under the leadership of Dr Daniel Getts, who is also CEO of Create Medicines. RNA Australia (搜索), led by Chair Kate Pounder and Chief Executive Officer Paul McDonald, will provide ongoing engagement with the Australian academic community.
Dr Getts emphasized the collaborative nature of the achievement: "This has been a significant cross-team effort – combining the NSW Government's vision, strategic direction and resources with Aurora Biosynthetics (搜索)' ingenuity, know-how and entrepreneurial spirit."
Building Sovereign Capability
Minister for Innovation, Science and Technology Anoulack Chanthivong positioned the developments within broader strategic objectives: "We all saw during COVID-19 (搜索) how quickly global conditions can change, and how vital it is to have the capability to develop vaccines and treatments here at home. This facility strengthens NSW's resilience and ensures we can respond faster and more effectively to future health threats."
The facility becomes a cornerstone of NSW's RNA research ecosystem, following previous government investments including the UNW RNA Institute and Australia's first Viral Vector Manufacturing Facility at Westmead Health and Innovation District.
Paul McDonald, CEO of RNA Australia (搜索), emphasized the retention of local talent: "By establishing a world-class RNA manufacturing hub right here in NSW, we are ensuring our local researchers no longer have to head overseas. We are providing the infrastructure to realise life-saving medicinal breakthroughs right here in our own backyard."
