This achievement underscores the CTU's capabilities in designing and coordinating robust clinical studies aimed at improving patient health and care.
National Recognition and Regional Leadership
The Lancashire CTU is now one of only two fully registered units in the North West Coast region and joins an elite group of 49 units nationwide. This recognition signifies that the CTU possesses the requisite experience and facilities to conduct high-quality clinical research. Based at UCLan's Preston Campus, the CTU is the sole fully registered entity of its kind in Lancashire and South Cumbria.
Key Trials and Research Impact
Since attaining provisional status in January 2020, the Lancashire CTU has been involved in several pivotal trials. Notably, the STIMULATE-ICP Study, a large-scale, long-COVID (搜索) trial, successfully recruited 1,145 participants. The CTU's portfolio also includes the COMMITS trial, which explores methods to support adjustment to life after stroke (搜索), and the MANTRA trial, which aims to determine the optimal dose and duration of antibiotics following surgery for a broken jaw.
Leadership Perspective
Professor Dame Caroline Watkins, Director of the Lancashire CTU, expressed her pride in the unit's achievement. "We are delighted and proud to be the first fully-registered CTU in Lancashire and South Cumbria," she stated. "This recognition is testament to the progress the CTU has made over the last few years and means that more vital health and social care research can be conducted in the region, which will benefit the community both socially and economically."
Strengthening the Team
The Lancashire CTU is set to further bolster its capabilities with the return of Professor Chris Sutton in January 2025. Professor Sutton, who previously spent nearly 30 years at UCLan, will bring extensive experience in clinical trial statistics and mental health trials. His expertise in trial conduct research, particularly in enhancing the inclusivity of under-represented groups, aligns perfectly with the CTU's growing research focus in this area.
Professor Sutton shared his enthusiasm about rejoining UCLan, stating, "Following the award of full registration by UKCRC, I’m really looking forward to working with Professor Watkins and the rest of the team to enhance and broaden the CTU’s strengths. My recent experience and ongoing collaborations in mental health trials will develop its portfolio in this key area of healthcare."
