Oman Moves Closer to Adopting National Biotechnology Strategy

An expanded ministerial meeting convened in Muscat on Wednesday has brought Oman significantly closer to adopting its National Biotechnology Strategy, with stakeholders reviewing and reaching consensus on the final draft before its submission to the Council of Ministers for formal approval.
The high-level session brought together ministers, senior officials from relevant government entities, members of the steering committee overseeing the project, representatives of the international consultancy firm executing the strategy, and officials from Oman India Fertiliser Company (OMIFCO) (搜索), which is funding the initiative.
The meeting was convened to reaffirm the imperative of achieving national consensus among decision-makers from various government entities, ensuring alignment on the strategy's direction and priorities.
Three Pillars of Biotechnology Development
The strategy has been shaped through a series of specialized workshops conducted over recent months, with broad participation from specialists and technical professionals working across Oman's biotechnology sector. These consultations resulted in the identification of priorities for the strategy's three main biotechnology pillars: red biotechnology, focused on healthcare applications; green biotechnology, centered on agricultural innovation; and white biotechnology, addressing industrial biotechnology needs.
Participants also endorsed the outputs of the project's third phase and formally adopted the work plan for the fourth phase.
Action Plan and Short-Term Projects
The fourth-phase action plan proposes a governance framework and operational business model, alongside preliminary feasibility studies for 12 short-term biotechnology projects. These actionable opportunities are slated for implementation during the 11th Five-Year Development Plan, in accordance with the established timeline for the completion of the National Biotechnology Strategy project.
Once approved by the cabinet, the strategy is expected to serve as a comprehensive roadmap for expanding biotechnology research, encouraging innovation and investment, and supporting economic diversification under Oman Vision 2040. The framework also emphasizes strengthening governance mechanisms and the protection of genetic data across the Sultanate.
