Ontario Adds Merck's CAPVAXIVE to Publicly Funded Adult Pneumococcal Immunization Program

CAPVAXIVE is Health Canada approved for adults 18 and older against invasive pneumococcal disease (搜索) caused by 21 Streptococcus pneumoniae serotypes.
Canadian surveillance data from 2019 to 2023 showed CAPVAXIVE serotypes accounted for roughly 65% of adult IPD cases in those aged 18 to 49, 74% in those 50 to 64, and 80% in those 65 and older.
Merck (搜索), known as MSD outside the United States and Canada, said Ontario will include CAPVAXIVE in its publicly funded adult immunization program, a decision the company says expands access to pneumococcal immunization for eligible older adults in the province.
CAPVAXIVE is a pneumococcal 21-valent conjugate vaccine approved by Health Canada for adults 18 years and older to help prevent invasive pneumococcal disease (搜索), including sepsis, meningitis, bacteremic pneumonia, pleural empyema and bacteremia, caused by 21 Streptococcus pneumoniae serotypes. Surveillance data from the Public Health Agency of Canada covering 2019 to 2023 showed the serotypes included in CAPVAXIVE accounted for about 65% of IPD cases in adults aged 18 to 49, about 74% in adults aged 50 to 64, and about 80% in adults aged 65 and older. Merck (搜索) noted these figures do not reflect the efficacy of CAPVAXIVE.
In Canada, approximately 3,000 cases of IPD are reported each year, with young children, older adults and people with certain underlying medical conditions at increased risk of severe disease.
