Orano Med Leverages Nuclear Fuel Legacy to Chase Radiopharma Leadership with Lead-212 Therapies

Orano Med (搜索), a subsidiary of French nuclear fuel cycle corporation Orano, is positioning itself to become what CEO Frédéric Desdouits describes as a "world leader in radiopharma" by leveraging a unique asset: exclusive access to what may be the world's largest supply of pure thorium, the raw material needed to produce the rare radioactive isotope lead-212.
The company is developing a pipeline of targeted alpha therapies — radiopharmaceuticals that use alpha emitters to precisely destroy cancer cells — built around lead-212, an isotope prized for its short half-life and ability to bind to biological vectors via chelators to kill cancer cells with limited toxicity.
"We are the only one today in the world to have access to an unlimited amount of lead-212," Desdouits said, explaining that the thorium stockpile was leftover from Orano's mining activities decades ago. "It happens that our mother company, Orano, owns the largest — maybe the only — stock of thorium in the world. Pure thorium."
Building a complete value chain
Over the past two years, Orano Med (搜索) has undertaken a significant infrastructure buildout. The company opened a new global headquarters and state-of-the-art R&D laboratories in France, launched an industrial-scale pharmaceutical facility to produce lead-212-based radioligand therapies, broke ground on an industrial plant to produce thorium-228, and expanded its main R&D center in Texas.
"We have now a platform where we have protein chemistry, we have chelators, we have the clean rooms to produce drugs, we have the control of the lead-212 manufacturing," said Desdouits, who was appointed CEO in April. "We have the entire value chain."
The company developed a patented, cost-efficient, large-scale method to extract lead-212, addressing what has been a significant barrier in the field. Lead-212 is derived from the decay process of thorium-232 and is "complex" to extract, requiring access to raw materials that few organizations possess.
Pipeline and partnerships
Orano Med (搜索)'s lead asset, AlphaMedix, is being developed in collaboration with Sanofi and RadioMedix (搜索) for neuroendocrine tumors (搜索) and demonstrated positive results in phase 2 data reported last year.
The pipeline also includes a pre-targeted radio immunotherapy treatment for metastatic colorectal cancer (搜索) being developed with Roche, several assets in partnership with Swiss biopharma Molecular Partners, and in-house candidates targeting solid tumors and prostate cancer.
A competitive radiopharma landscape
Targeted alpha therapies are drawing increasing interest from large pharmaceutical companies. While Orano Med (搜索) focuses on lead-212, other alpha emitters are also in development. Bayer (搜索)'s Xofigo, which uses radium-223, is currently the only approved alpha emitter on the market. Companies like Actinium Pharmaceuticals are leveraging actinium-225 (搜索).
AstraZeneca in December signed a 10-year supply agreement for actinium-225 (搜索) with radioisotope producer Niowave and acquired actinium-225-based biotech Fusion Pharmaceuticals in 2024. Bristol Myers Squibb (搜索) similarly acquired RayzeBio and its actinium-225-based radiopharma platform in 2024. Other startups developing lead-212 candidates in oncology include Perspective Therapeutics and Artbio.
Looking ahead
Desdouits has focused his early tenure on aligning the organization around a shared mission. "Everything we do in this company is super high technology," he said. "I'm very keen on transforming the technology into something that has value."
His priorities include expanding the pipeline, ensuring access to resources, building support from the medical community, and demonstrating "what lead-212 can bring to patients."
