OSF Cancer Institute Joins Hoosier Cancer Research Network to Expand Trial Access in Central Illinois

OSF HealthCare Cancer Institute (搜索) has joined the Hoosier Cancer Research Network (搜索) (HCRN), a nationally recognized nonprofit cancer (搜索) research organization, in a move intended to expand clinical trial opportunities for patients across Central Illinois and give OSF physicians a larger role in developing cancer research.
HCRN advances cancer (搜索) research through collaboration among academic medical centers, community health systems, pharmaceutical companies and biotechnology partners. Founded in 1984, the network now supports more than 100 academic and community research sites nationwide, including numerous National Cancer Institute (NCI)-designated comprehensive cancer centers, and maintains a particular focus on investigator-initiated studies.
According to the OSF Cancer (搜索) Institute, HCRN has conducted more than 250 clinical trials, enrolled more than 10,000 patients and contributed to more than 350 scientific publications.
"There's a need here. We're developing something special here in Peoria," said Robert McWilliams, MD, deputy director of the OSF Cancer (搜索) Institute. "This helps us get recognition that we're a player in the region and serving the people of Central Illinois. It also means we're collaborating with other researchers in the region to put OSF and those we serve on the map."
Trial Portfolio and Patient Access
OSF is now identifying clinical trials available through the network that could potentially be made available to its patients. McWilliams said the network offers an ongoing portfolio of studies that OSF can evaluate for opening in Peoria or in other OSF markets, with the aim of accelerating the speed of research conducted through the network.
Clinical trials can provide patients with access to promising treatments and therapies that may not otherwise be available. McWilliams said the partnership could expand clinical trial opportunities for patients with all types of cancer (搜索), describing it as an opportunity to work with like-minded physicians who want to bring cutting-edge therapies to patients and be involved in writing clinical trials.
Investigator-Led Research
Beyond patient access, the affiliation gives OSF physicians the opportunity to help develop and lead clinical research of their own. McWilliams said collaboration among physicians and research institutions can help speed up the development of new cancer (搜索) treatments.
"Having the ability to collaborate and work together on things can accelerate the development of new treatments for cancer (搜索)," he said.

Timing and Long-Term Commitment
McWilliams said the partnership comes at an important time, as doctors nationwide are seeing more cancer (搜索) cases among younger people. He added that OSF Cancer Institute plans to maintain the partnership indefinitely.
The affiliation strengthens the growing role of OSF Cancer (搜索) Institute in cancer research and positions the organization to contribute to clinical studies that could shape the future of cancer prevention, diagnosis and treatment. For patients in Central Illinois, the network membership creates more opportunities to participate in cancer research while receiving high-quality care.
