OSUCCC–James Appoints D. Neil Hayes to Lead Precision Cancer Medicine Institute

D. Neil Hayes has been appointed Director of the Institute for Precision Cancer (搜索) Medicine at OSUCCC–James (搜索), effective Sept. 14, 2026.
Hayes will also serve as Deputy Director, strengthening the center's leadership in cancer (搜索) genomics and precision oncology.
His role will focus on expanding genomic testing access, accelerating genomic technology adoption, and integrating genomic data into research and clinical care.
The Ohio State University Comprehensive Cancer (搜索) Center–James Cancer Hospital and Solove Research Institute (OSUCCC–James (搜索)) has appointed D. Neil Hayes as Director of the Institute for Precision Cancer Medicine, effective Sept. 14, 2026. Hayes will also serve as Deputy Director of OSUCCC–James, a move aimed at further strengthening the institution's nationally recognized leadership in cancer genomics and precision oncology.
Kimryn Rathmell, Chief Executive Officer of OSUCCC–James (搜索), announced the appointment, describing the center's work as "driven by curiosity, collaboration and a shared commitment to advancing more personalized cancer (搜索) care."
In his new roles, Hayes will help accelerate precision cancer (搜索) medicine at OSUCCC–James (搜索) by bringing together advances in clinical genomics, translational research, data science, and health equity to improve patient outcomes. He will provide scientific leadership to expand access to genomic testing, accelerate the adoption of emerging genomic technologies, and strengthen the infrastructure needed to integrate genomic data into research and clinical care.
Rathmell emphasized Hayes's collaborative approach, noting that as "a strong advocate for team science," Hayes will work closely with leaders across the cancer (搜索) program to support genomically informed treatment decisions, expand biomarker-driven clinical trials, and foster collaborations that build on the strengths of OSUCCC–James (搜索).
Hayes brings a combination of scientific vision, clinical expertise, and collaborative leadership that Rathmell said will "further strengthen the OSUCCC–James (搜索) as a destination for innovation in precision oncology."
Most recently, Hayes served as Director of the University of Tennessee Health Science Center's Center for Cancer (搜索) Research, where he also held leadership roles as Assistant Dean for Cancer Research, Chief of Hematology and Oncology, and Van Vleet Endowed Professor of Medical Oncology. He additionally holds an appointment as adjunct faculty in the Department of Computational Biology at St. Jude Children's Research Hospital.
Hayes earned his medical degree from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and completed training at Boston University School of Medicine, Tufts New England Medical Center, and the Dana-Farber Cancer (搜索) Institute. He also holds graduate degrees from the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health and Tufts.
Rathmell expressed confidence in the appointment's impact, stating, "Dr. Hayes will advance our leadership in precision cancer (搜索) medicine and accelerate discoveries that improve patient outcomes."
