Panthera Biopartners (搜索), a UK-based clinical trial Site Management Organisation, has acquired Hungary's leading independent clinical research site network, Óbudai Egészségügyi Centrum Kft (搜索) (OEC (搜索)), marking its first European expansion.
The acquisition adds four Hungarian clinical research sites to Panthera's network, including a flagship Budapest location and over 70 specialist investigators, strengthening patient recruitment capabilities across Europe.
OEC (搜索) operates over 60 clinical trials across Phase II-IV studies and brings nearly three decades of experience in delivering high-quality clinical research with strong patient access in Hungary's growing clinical trials market.
Panthera Biopartners (搜索), the UK's leading clinical trial Site Management Organisation (SMO), has completed its first international acquisition by purchasing Óbudai Egészségügyi Centrum Kft (搜索) (OEC (搜索)), Hungary's premier independent clinical research site network. The strategic deal marks a significant milestone in Panthera's European expansion strategy, creating a powerful cross-border platform for accelerating clinical trial delivery.
Strategic Expansion into Hungary's Clinical Research Market
The acquisition brings four established Hungarian clinical research sites into Panthera's network, including OEC (搜索)'s flagship Budapest location alongside facilities in Zalaegerszeg, Dunaújváros and Kaposvár. These sites provide access to over 70 specialist investigators and diverse patient populations, significantly enhancing Panthera's recruitment capabilities across Europe.
"This acquisition represents a major milestone for Panthera as we expand into mainland Europe," said Stuart Young, CEO of Panthera. "OEC (搜索) is a well-established organisation in Hungary with an outstanding reputation for quality, efficiency and patient access. By bringing together leading businesses in the UK and Hungary, we are creating a powerful platform to deliver faster, more reliable clinical trials at scale."
Established Clinical Research Infrastructure
Founded in 1997, OEC (搜索) has built Hungary's leading independent clinical research organisation over nearly three decades, establishing itself as the only non-academic site network operating at scale in the country. The organisation currently manages over 60 clinical trials across its four sites, delivering Phase II-IV studies across diverse therapeutic areas with fully trained staff working to Good Clinical Practice (GCP) standards.
OEC (搜索)'s community-based operational model enables rapid study start-up, streamlined contracting, and flexible delivery across traditional, hybrid and virtual trial formats. This infrastructure provides sponsors with enhanced patient access and improved recruitment timelines across the UK and EU markets.
Investment-Backed Growth Strategy
The acquisition follows Panthera's investment from LDC (搜索), the private equity investor which is part of Lloyds Banking Group (搜索), alongside reinvestment from BGF (搜索) in August 2025. The funding was specifically allocated to support Panthera's ambition to become a major clinical research player across Europe through targeted international expansion.
Headquartered in Preston, Lancashire, Panthera was established in 2019 and specialises in patient recruitment and delivery of Phase II and Phase III clinical trials. The company currently operates seven UK sites and works with eight of the world's 12 largest pharmaceutical companies.
Market Positioning and Future Expansion
Hungary represents an increasingly attractive market for clinical research, offering highly regarded investigators, engaged patient populations and a competitive cost base. The combined Panthera-OEC (搜索) network positions the organisation strongly within the global clinical trials landscape, providing sponsors with scalable access to patients across multiple European geographies.
"OEC (搜索) has built a market leading position in Hungary by focusing on quality, innovation and patient-centred research," added Gábor Kiss, Managing Director of OEC. "Joining Panthera enables us to scale our capabilities, expand our reach, and continue delivering high-quality clinical trials for sponsors and CRO partners across Europe."
With continued support from LDC (搜索) and BGF (搜索), Panthera is actively pursuing additional acquisition opportunities across Europe as it builds a differentiated, multi-country SMO platform to meet increasing global demand for faster, more efficient clinical trials.
