Pelage Pharmaceuticals Secures $120M Series B to Advance Hair Loss Stem Cell Therapy Toward Phase III
核心洞察
Pelage Pharmaceuticals (搜索) raised $120 million in Series B funding co-led by ARCH Venture Partners (搜索) and GV (搜索) to advance its hair follicle stem cell therapy PP405 toward Phase III trials.
The topical small molecule PP405 demonstrated good tolerability and early efficacy signals in a Phase IIa trial involving 78 participants with diverse skin types and hair textures.
Hair loss (搜索) affects more than 80% of men and 40% of women throughout their lifetimes, yet no new FDA-approved treatment has become available for decades.
Pelage Pharmaceuticals (搜索) has closed a $120 million Series B financing round to advance its regenerative hair loss (搜索) treatment toward Phase III clinical trials, addressing a market where innovation has remained stagnant for decades despite affecting more than 80% of men and 40% of women throughout their lifetimes.
The Los Angeles-based clinical-stage biotechnology company's funding was co-led by ARCH Venture Partners (搜索) and GV (搜索) (Google Ventures (搜索)), with participation from existing investors Main Street Advisors (搜索), Visionary Ventures (搜索), and YK Bioventures (搜索). The company completed the financing within weeks of opening the round, demonstrating strong investor confidence in its scientific approach.
Novel Mechanism Targets Hair Follicle Stem Cells
At the center of Pelage's innovation is PP405, a topical small molecule designed to reactivate dormant hair follicle stem cells (搜索). Unlike existing treatments that primarily slow hair loss (搜索) progression, PP405 targets what the company believes is the root cause of androgenetic alopecia (搜索) by addressing metabolic switches within hair follicle stem cells.
"Our approach is based on the groundbreaking discovery that hair follicle stem cells (搜索) have a unique metabolic switch. Supported by over 10 years of bench research on the mechanism and associated biological pathways, we have designed a first-in-class investigational treatment that reactivates these hair follicle stem cells to regrow hair," said Daniel Gil, chief executive of Pelage Pharmaceuticals (搜索).
The company hypothesizes that PP405 will be effective for all forms of non-scarring alopecias (搜索) and intends to evaluate the treatment in various indications, starting with androgenetic alopecia (搜索), which impacts men and women of all races and hair types.
Encouraging Phase IIa Results Drive Development Forward
The Series B funding follows positive results from Pelage's Phase IIa trial (NCT06393452), which enrolled 78 men and women representing diverse skin phototypes and hair textures. Participants received topical PP405 or placebo once daily for four weeks, with an eight-week observation period to track safety and secondary endpoints.
The trial successfully met its primary safety endpoint, with PP405 demonstrating good tolerability and no systemic absorption detected in blood samples. The study also revealed early efficacy signals that differentiated PP405 from existing treatments.
Following the controlled phase, participants in the placebo group were eligible for a three-month open-label extension to assess long-term safety, which has now been completed. Pelage plans to present the complete dataset at a medical meeting in 2026.
Addressing Significant Unmet Medical Need
The hair loss (搜索) treatment market represents a substantial unmet medical need, particularly given the limited innovation in FDA-approved options over recent decades. Women face especially limited choices, with only one FDA-approved treatment currently available.
"Despite the growing need for treatments for hair loss (搜索), which affects more than 80% of men and 40% of women throughout their lifetimes, innovation has been lacking, and a new FDA-approved option has not become available for decades," Gil noted.
This gap in effective treatments has created substantial market opportunity for approaches like Pelage's regenerative medicine strategy, which the $120 million in funding will support through critical late-stage trials.
Strategic Leadership Changes
The financing brings notable changes to Pelage's leadership structure. Cathy Friedman, who led the company's Series A financing under GV (搜索), has been appointed chair of the board. Friedman currently advises GV's life sciences portfolio and brings experience from her 15-year tenure on boards of leading public and private life sciences companies, as well as nearly 24 years at Morgan Stanley in various executive positions.
"Pelage is a pioneer in the regenerative medicine space, with a scientifically rigorous approach to address hair loss (搜索) that sets them apart from currently available treatments. This could fulfill an urgent need, as we see a growing portion of the population experiencing hair loss, including women, who only have one FDA-approved option," said Friedman.
Richard Heyman, venture partner at ARCH, will join Pelage's board of directors alongside CEO Gil and William Lowry, co-founder and president. Heyman brings extensive biotechnology experience as founder and chairman of ORIC Pharma (搜索) and chairman of several other therapeutic companies. His track record includes founding companies that achieved successful acquisitions, including Seragon Pharmaceuticals (搜索) (acquired by Genentech/Roche) and Aragon Pharmaceuticals (搜索) (purchased by Johnson & Johnson).
The company's spokesperson noted that while raising money remains challenging in the biotechnology industry, they have observed an uptick in fundraising and M&A activities in recent months, indicating that compelling science backed by strong data and clear product differentiation continues to drive successful financing rounds.
