PharmaTher Secures Exclusive Rights to Long-Acting Injectable Ketamine Technology for Treatment-Resistant Depression
核心洞察
PharmaTher has secured exclusive evaluation rights to Oakwood Laboratories (搜索)' patented long-acting injectable ketamine technology, designed to provide controlled drug release over weeks to months through subcutaneous or intramuscular administration.
The company closed the sale of its generic ketamine ANDA for over US$25 million in potential proceeds, providing non-dilutive funding to focus entirely on developing the differentiated LAI ketamine franchise.
The LAI ketamine program aims to improve patient adherence and reduce treatment burden while targeting high-value neuropsychiatric indications including treatment-resistant depression (搜索), major depressive disorder (搜索), and Parkinson's disease (搜索).
PharmaTher Holdings Ltd. (搜索) has secured exclusive evaluation rights to a patented long-acting injectable ketamine technology from Oakwood Laboratories (搜索), positioning the company to develop what could become a next-generation treatment for neuropsychiatric disorders (搜索). The agreement grants PharmaTher a 12-month exclusive evaluation period and option to obtain global development and commercialization rights for the LAI ketamine program.
The long-acting injectable approach leverages Oakwood's Chroniject™ microsphere-based drug delivery technology platform, designed to enable subcutaneous or intramuscular administration with controlled drug release over weeks to months. This represents a significant departure from current ketamine treatment models that require frequent clinic visits.
Strategic Focus on Differentiated Ketamine Franchise
To sharpen its focus on the LAI ketamine program, PharmaTher has closed the sale of its Abbreviated New Drug Application for generic ketamine hydrochloride injection to a leading sterile-injectables pharmaceutical company. The transaction provides a confidential upfront cash payment plus potential milestone and profit-sharing payments totaling more than US$25 million over time, subject to commercial performance.
"Closing the ANDA sale marks the start of PharmaTher's next chapter," said Fabio Chianelli, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of PharmaTher. "We have converted a legacy generic asset into non-dilutive capital and long-term upside, and we are now fully focused on building a differentiated, long-acting ketamine franchise for neuropsychiatric disorders (搜索)."
Addressing Treatment Limitations
The LAI ketamine approach aims to address several limitations of current ketamine therapy by enabling more convenient, less frequent dosing with controlled exposure. According to PharmaTher, this could improve safety by reducing acute adverse events such as dissociation and blood pressure spikes, enhance patient adherence, reduce treatment burden for providers, and broaden access to ketamine-based therapy while preserving the antidepressant effects associated with steady exposure.
"We believe long-acting ketamine is the natural evolution of today's ketamine treatment model," added Chianelli. "A convenient, less frequent injectable option has the potential to improve adherence, reduce clinic burden, and expand access while preserving ketamine's rapid antidepressant benefits."
Regulatory Strategy and Development Timeline
PharmaTher intends to pursue a 505(b)(2) regulatory pathway with an initial focus on high-value neuropsychiatric indications including treatment-resistant depression (搜索), major depressive disorder (搜索), and Parkinson's disease (搜索). The company plans to engage with the U.S. FDA to align on the streamlined regulatory path, clinical study design, and safety package.
Over the next three months, PharmaTher plans to execute focused milestones including finalizing CMC activities to support upcoming clinical studies. The company's near-term priorities include advancing formulation and CMC activities in collaboration with Oakwood, refining the regulatory strategy, preparing for formal FDA interactions including potential pre-IND discussions, and evaluating strategic partnering opportunities.
Market Potential and Commercial Appeal
If successful, PharmaTher believes the LAI ketamine program could represent a next-generation treatment-resistant depression (搜索) solution with significant commercial and strategic partnering appeal. The company expects that successful execution of development milestones could create multiple data, regulatory, and partnering inflection points over the next 6 months.
During the 12-month evaluation period, Oakwood will provide technical information and support to enable PharmaTher's assessment of CMC, clinical, and regulatory strategy. The agreement positions PharmaTher to potentially expand beyond treatment-resistant depression (搜索) into additional neuropsychiatric disorders (搜索) where long-acting ketamine may offer differentiated benefits and attractive market opportunities.
