DNA testing is also used once a patient starts treatment, to help understand if the treatment is working."
Current testing protocols create significant barriers to care. Patients often need to travel long distances to access testing facilities and then wait days or weeks for results. This delay, combined with multiple clinic visits, can hinder timely treatment initiation and ongoing care management.
Global Health Impact

"Given the technology is already in use for a range of other infectious diseases globally, our evidence paves the way for integrating infectious disease care significantly enhancing access to hepatitis B (搜索) testing, monitoring and treatment, no matter where someone lives."
Implications for Healthcare Delivery
The technology builds on successful point-of-care testing implementations for other infectious diseases, including hepatitis C. However, until this study, the efficacy of hepatitis B DNA (搜索) testing using fingerstick blood samples remained unknown.
"Access to testing is a major barrier to progress on hepatitis B (搜索) elimination," says Associate Professor Thomas Tu from Hepatitis B Voices (搜索). "We are hopeful that this research will support the roll-out of point-of-care testing for hepatitis B, enhancing access and ultimately, improving health and saving lives."
The breakthrough is particularly relevant for populations in low- and middle-income countries, where the majority of people with chronic hepatitis B (搜索) live, and where access to testing and treatment remains severely limited. Even in high-income countries like Australia, hepatitis B DNA (搜索) testing can be difficult to access for people living in remote areas.
