The reappointment, effective 1 August 2026, extends his leadership for an additional five years and signals strong institutional and governmental confidence in the strategic direction he has set since first assuming the role in 2021.

The renewal arrives at a pivotal moment with the launch of the 2026–2030 Institutional Project, an ambitious roadmap built around four strategic priorities: personalizing care pathways, strengthening research with high societal impact, accelerating digital transformation, and securing the institution's resources for the long term. This new framework builds directly on the foundation established by the 2021 project and aims to position Gustave Roussy (搜索) as a European and global benchmark for the oncology of the future.
First-Term Achievements in Patient Care
Prof. Barlesi's first term was marked by significant advances spanning the full continuum of cancer care. The Institute launched and subsequently rolled out nationwide the Interception personalized prevention program, developed rapid diagnostic pathways, and made its liquid biopsy program available to all French patients. Treatment innovations included the development of vectorized interventional radiology, the rollout of hypofractionation in radiotherapy, and the strengthening of radiotherapy, radiology, and surgery technical platforms.
Research Excellence and Clinical Trial Leadership
Under the research leadership of Prof. Fabrice André, Gustave Roussy (搜索) has cemented its standing among the world's premier academic centers. Since 2021, the Institute obtained accreditation for the PRISM Institute as a University Hospital Institute (IHU), coordinated five University Hospital Research (RHU) programs, secured eight European Research Council (ERC) grants, coordinated three major European projects, and received seven ATIP-Avenir grants to support promising young researchers. The physical transformation of the campus is set to make the Grand Paris site one of Europe's leading oncology hubs. Gustave Roussy (搜索) is a founding member of the Paris Saclay Cancer Cluster, and the development of the Campus Grand Parc includes a future 33,000-square-meter research building scheduled to open at the end of 2028.
Gustave Roussy (搜索)'s international influence has expanded through the opening of several hospitals under the Gustave Roussy International brand license in the Middle East and Asia. The Alumni network, the first of its kind for a cancer center in France, now brings together more than 2,000 members from 25 nationalities, fostering scientific and medical collaborations worldwide.
In education, more than 6,200 students were trained in 2025, while the digital teaching platform registered over 11,700 users, including 2,600 new learners. Seminars attracted 1,500 participants, 30% of whom were international.

Underpinning this ambition has been rigorous financial management that has preserved the Institute's balance while securing resources through fundraising to support investments in patient care, research, and innovation. The shared institutional ambition remains clear: to cure 80% of patients by 2040.
