In 2023, Scolyer was diagnosed with glioblastoma (搜索), an aggressive brain tumor for which the standard treatment protocol — immediate surgical excision followed by radiotherapy and chemotherapy — has remained largely unchanged for two decades. Most patients with this form of tumor survive less than a year. Confronted with this prognosis, Scolyer refused what he described as accepting "certain death without trying something."
Together with his longtime collaborator and friend Professor Georgina Long, Scolyer devised an experimental treatment strategy based on the immunotherapy (搜索) breakthroughs the pair had previously established in advanced melanoma (搜索). Their research had demonstrated that immunotherapy works more effectively when a combination of drugs is administered before surgery to remove a tumor. Applying this principle, Scolyer became the first brain cancer patient in the world to receive combination, pre-surgery immunotherapy. He was also given a personalized vaccine tailored to his tumor's characteristics, designed to enhance the cancer-detecting capabilities of the immunotherapeutic agents.
"I wanted to keep contributing, even in my darkest hour," Scolyer wrote in an open letter announcing his passing.
The treatment produced encouraging results. Subsequent scans appeared to show a positive immune response in the brain, and although Scolyer's cancer ultimately returned in 2025, the experimental approach significantly extended his life beyond initial expectations. Those findings have now triggered an early-stage clinical trial in the United States aimed at replicating the results.
"This was science in action!" said esteemed melanoma (搜索) surgeon John Thompson AO in a tribute to his friend.
Scolyer and Long's contributions to oncology extend far beyond this single case. Over the past decade, their research on immunotherapy (搜索) — which harnesses the body's immune system to attack cancer cells — has dramatically improved outcomes for advanced melanoma (搜索) patients globally. Where the disease was once considered a near-certain death sentence, approximately half of patients are now essentially cured, a remarkable increase from less than 10% before their work transformed the treatment landscape.
In recognition of their extraordinary contribution to medical science, Scolyer and Long were jointly named Australian of the Year in 2024.
Throughout his distinguished career, Scolyer authored more than 800 scientific publications, helped establish the world's largest melanoma (搜索) biobank, and mentored countless doctors and researchers. He also took particular pride in guiding the next generation of pathologists. His work has saved lives across the globe and fundamentally changed the way melanoma is treated.
During his illness, Scolyer shared his journey publicly through regular updates and social media posts, offering inspiration to cancer patients and their families while raising awareness about the importance of medical research. In his final letter, he expressed gratitude for the support he received: "You've laughed with me, cried with me, and provided encouragement and support to keep going just when I needed it most. I haven't sugar coated my journey and I sincerely thank you for allowing me the space and opportunity to share it with you, warts and all."
Scolyer is survived by his wife, Dr. Katie Nicoll, and their three children. He described his family as "shining examples of the best of humanity" who made him "extremely proud."
