Cancer Research UK has awarded a £2.5 million, five-year grant to fund the next phase of an ovarian cancer (搜索) research programme led by Prof Stephen Taylor at The University of Manchester.
The laboratory houses the largest resource of living ovarian cancer (搜索) cell cultures of its kind in the world, enabling researchers to identify new drug-targetable weaknesses.
The programme aims to develop better treatment options and move toward more personalised treatment for women with ovarian cancer (搜索).
A £2.5 million grant from Cancer Research UK will fund the next phase of an ovarian cancer (搜索) research programme led by Prof Stephen Taylor at The University of Manchester, based at the Manchester Cancer Research Centre. The five-year award aims to develop better treatment options for women with the disease.
The funding was welcomed by Gemma Coleman, a 37-year-old cancer survivor from Turton, Lancashire, who was diagnosed with two separate cancers affecting her ovary and womb in 2022. She underwent two major operations, including the removal of her ovaries, womb, fallopian tubes, lymph nodes and affected abdominal tissue, followed by eight months of chemotherapy.
"You have to learn to live with the long-term physical and emotional impact of treatment," she said. Now three years into remission, Gemma manages long-term effects including chronic pain, fatigue, bone weakness and fibrosis, and undergoes regular scans and blood tests.
A Living Laboratory for Ovarian Cancer Research
Prof Stephen Taylor described the scale and significance of the research resource underpinning the programme. "Our laboratory is home to the largest resource of living ovarian cancer (搜索) cell cultures of its kind in the world," he said.
"By understanding how these cancers grow and respond to treatment, we can identify new weaknesses that could be targeted with future drugs," Prof Taylor added. "Every discovery brings us a step closer to more personalised treatment for women with ovarian cancer (搜索)."
The Human Impact of Treatment
Gemma Coleman's experience highlights the long-term consequences of ovarian cancer (搜索) treatment. Her diagnosis "felt like a death sentence, but surviving cancer isn't the end of the story," she said, noting that she now hopes to adopt in the future.
At the age of 34, Gemma went into surgical menopause and was told she would never be able to become pregnant. "My life was completely tipped upside down. We always dreamed of having children. Having that choice taken away was heartbreaking," she said.
Hope Through Research
Gemma expressed optimism about the potential of the newly funded research. "Research gives people like me hope that one day cancer won't be something people fear in the same way, but something that can be treated much more effectively," she said.
The programme's focus on understanding how ovarian cancers grow and respond to treatment is intended to identify new therapeutic weaknesses that could be exploited by future drugs, with the ultimate goal of delivering more personalised treatment approaches for women diagnosed with ovarian cancer (搜索).
