Yet a prominent psychologist is urging the public to think twice before swabbing, warning that the emotional and psychological fallout from unexpected results can be profound and, in some cases, destabilizing.
In her new book, The Psychology of Genealogy, Dr. Susan Moore—a retired Australian university researcher in social and developmental psychology—examines the complex emotional terrain of at-home DNA testing. Drawing on research and real-life cases, she argues that the decision to gift or take a DNA test requires far more consideration than most people realize.
"Should you give DNA kits as gifts? It can be fun; it can be risky," Moore said. "Do first think carefully about how your intended recipient might cope with unexpected outcomes."

Moore warns that the psychological stakes are higher than many anticipate. As databases expand, surprising matches and results have become increasingly common. Misattributed paternity, donor-conception discoveries, late-found adoptions, and connections to hundreds of previously unknown half-siblings have all emerged from growing genetic databases.
"Hobbyist family historians are uncovering joyful and inspiring stories of the past as well as sad and unsettling secrets of their ancestry," Moore explains. "Records and DNA matches provide boosts, challenges and even threats to one's sense of self, and this is occurring at unprecedented levels."
Moore describes the phenomenon as "identity disruption (搜索)"—a state in which new genetic information undermines a person's sense of self and belonging. The book references cases where individuals discovered their biological father was actually their mother's fertility doctor, or where "late discovery" of adoption or donor conception occurred through DNA testing.
"At the personal level, these may be findings that cause you great distress, that destabilise your sense of who you are, that initially at least, you would have preferred not to know. Once known however, they cannot be unknown," Moore explains.
The psychological trajectory following such discoveries varies considerably. "While some will be able to integrate this new information into their understanding of selfhood, family relationships and belongingness, others will struggle with acceptance, trust and feelings of betrayal," Moore notes.
Data Privacy Concerns
Beyond personal revelations, legitimate worries about data security persist. In 2023, hackers accessed DNA data of 7 million users of one of the most popular DNA testing providers, and the company's subsequent financial troubles raised questions about what happens to genetic data if companies fold.
Why People Test Despite the Risks
Moore points to fundamental human drives that explain the enduring appeal of genetic testing. Curiosity, a need for rootedness, and the intellectual thrill of uncovering family lore all motivate millions to send in their swabs.
"Curiosity is a great motivator. How exciting it can be to discover the identity of an ancestor, solve a family mystery, prove or disprove family 'legends' or discover previously unknown living relatives," she explains.
Genealogy can bring genuine joy when people find long-lost relatives or overcome research barriers. "Indeed, genealogists regularly report elation and joy as they unearth lost relatives, discover the identity of a 'missing' ancestor, or otherwise break down 'brick walls,'" Moore says.
Guidance for Prospective Testers
For those still considering genetic testing, Moore offers nuanced guidance. She recommends testing only if individuals want to explore their ancestry and have the time and patience to learn how to interpret results and contact matches ethically.
She is clear about when to reconsider: "No, unless you're prepared for surprises, some of them perhaps unpleasant, or if you're very worried about privacy breaches."
Crucially, Moore advises against gifting a DNA kit without asking first. She emphasizes the importance of an honest conversation before gifting—does the recipient actually want to know? Are they prepared for unexpected discoveries? Have they considered the privacy implications?
"DNA gives you some new and interesting clues to your family tree structure, but the hard work of making sense of those clues must still be done," Moore concludes.
