Qualcomm (搜索) Incorporated and ASUS Group (搜索) have jointly announced the launch of the "Pharmaceutical AI Agent," the first AI assistant designed specifically for community pharmacists that can run locally on edge devices. Announced on September 2, 2026, the initiative supports smart healthcare implementation under Taiwan's Executive Yuan-led Southern Taiwan Silicon Valley Program. Through Qualcomm for Good, Qualcomm is working with ASUS subsidiaries Taiwan AI Cloud (搜索) (TWAI) and Taiwan Health and Bio DataBank Technology (搜索) (THBC) to invest technologies, platforms, and resources, with AI PCs and other edge devices donated to support more than 50 demonstration pharmacies across Chiayi, Tainan, Kaohsiung, and Pingtung.
Addressing Polypharmacy in a Super-Aged Society
Taiwan officially became a "super-aged society" in 2025, with its population aged 65 and above exceeding 4.67 million. According to survey data, nearly 40% of older adults take multiple medications. As chronic diseases and polypharmacy (搜索) become increasingly common, pharmacists must handle more complex prescription information and medication counselling needs within a limited amount of time.
To address this challenge, the Pharmaceutical AI Agent differs from general drug information search or generative AI conversational tools by focusing on the actual workflows of frontline pharmacists. By using AI to integrate multiple sources of medication information, it assists pharmacists in identifying potential risks such as drug-drug interactions, duplicate therapies, and inappropriate medication use, while also supporting patient medication counselling and education.
From Cloud to Edge: Optimizing a 120-Billion-Parameter Model
The core technological breakthrough lies in optimizing the open-weight GPT-OSS language model—originally requiring cloud computing with 120 billion parameters—into a 20-billion-parameter model capable of running standalone on AI PCs powered by Qualcomm (搜索) technology platforms. The system requires only 48GB of memory to perform inference in an offline environment, eliminating the need to upload sensitive medical data such as prescriptions and medication records to external cloud services.
The solution incorporates data from the open-access drug package insert database of the Taiwan Food and Drug Administration (TFDA), Ministry of Health and Welfare, providing pharmaceutical information tailored to the needs of pharmaceutical services in Taiwan. THBC will connect with and train local demonstration pharmacies to support real-world deployment. Through on-device Edge AI computing, the AI Agent can perform inference locally even in offline environments, supporting pharmacists in integrating and cross-checking information across multiple prescriptions. This approach reduces the need to transmit sensitive medical and medication data to an external cloud, strengthening data privacy, security, and control—demonstrating how sovereign AI can be put into practice in smart healthcare.
Hardware Deployment and Validation Timeline
On the hardware side, the collaborative team provides end-user devices including the ASUS Zenbook A16 AI laptop powered by the Qualcomm (搜索) Snapdragon X2 Elite Extreme processor, as well as the Aetina MegaEdge AIP-FR68 edge AI inference platform equipped with the Qualcomm Cloud AI 100 Ultra accelerator card. Demonstration sites have already connected grassroots pharmacy channels including Evergreen Pharmacy (Changqing Pharmacy) and Yes Chain Pharmacy (We Can Medicines).
Deployment is expected to be completed by the end of October, followed by a six-month field validation period. Taiwan AI Cloud (搜索) General Manager Wu Han-chang noted that if the initial six-month validation yields results meeting expectations, broader deployment could begin as early as the second quarter of next year. Based on an estimated 5,000 pharmacies across Taiwan, with each facility equipped with two end-user devices, total potential hardware demand could reach 10,000 units, with related industry AI spending expected to become more pronounced by 2028. He further indicated future potential to export Taiwan's smart healthcare and sovereign AI expertise to markets outside Taiwan.
Sovereign AI in Action
Smart healthcare is an integral part of the Executive Yuan's cross-ministerial Southern Taiwan Silicon Valley Program and Taiwan's broader ambition to become an "AI island." National Science and Technology Council Deputy Minister Chen-Hao Chang emphasized that the National AI Strategy Committee established Taiwan's strategic goals for AI development in June, aiming to build a trusted sovereign AI ecosystem deployed in public sectors including healthcare, education, finance, and the judiciary.
"This time, Qualcomm (搜索) and ASUS Group (搜索) have joined forces to develop the Pharmaceutical AI Agent tailored to frontline healthcare and pharmaceutical professionals, helping strengthen safeguards for medication safety," Chang said.

A Scalable Smart Pharmacy Model
ASUS Group (搜索) continues to advance its "AI City" strategy by integrating sovereign computing, models, platforms, and application capabilities. Building on the existing "AI City" collaboration between ASUS and the Tainan City Government, the Pharmaceutical AI Agent further brings Edge AI and sovereign AI technologies into frontline community pharmacies. The first phase will validate the feasibility, usability, and effectiveness of AI-assisted medication review in real-world settings, while progressively establishing a replicable and scalable smart pharmacy model.
