The Government of Quebec has released its first-ever Politique québécoise en médecine génomique (Quebec Genomic Medicine Policy), a landmark framework dedicated to the ethical, equitable, and sustainable expansion of genomic medicine across the province. The policy represents the culmination of several years of collaboration among clinicians, researchers, and patient groups, and positions Quebec at the forefront of integrating genomic discoveries into everyday clinical care.
The policy will help clinicians better anticipate disease risk and refine diagnoses for patients and their families, marking a decisive shift from genomic testing being confined to a handful of specialized centers toward routine, equitable practice throughout Quebec.
Dr. Alan Spatz, medical director of Optilab Montreal-MUHC and president of the Cancer (搜索) committee of the Réseau québécois de diagnostic moléculaire (搜索) (RQDM), was among a small group of experts invited by the Ministère de la Santé et des Services sociaux (搜索) (MSSS) to help shape the policy. "This policy is a decisive step for Quebec. It gives our laboratories the standards, the infrastructure, and the coordination we need to move genomic testing from a handful of specialized centres into routine, equitable practice across the province, which means faster answers and more personalized care for patients wherever they live," said Dr. Spatz.
Translating Genomic Discoveries into Clinical Practice
Patients are already benefiting from genomic discoveries translated into everyday care at institutions such as the McGill University Health Centre (MUHC). A research team led by Dr. Julia Burnier is advancing liquid biopsy (搜索) approaches that use minimally invasive samples, including blood and saliva, to detect and analyze cancer (搜索)-derived DNA. Through international collaborations, the MUHC has established itself as a leading voice in genomic medicine, driven substantially by work underway in the OPTILAB Division of Molecular Genetics. Continued participation in the RQDM reflects a shared vision: accounting for fine-grained variations in a person's DNA to offer more tailored therapies and enable more nuanced conversations with patients and families.

The policy carries particular significance for oncology, where precision medicine is reshaping treatment paradigms. Dr. Ramy Saleh, an MUHC oncologist, emphasized the transformative potential: "Precision medicine is transforming oncology by allowing us to move beyond a one-size-fits-all approach.
