Queen's University Belfast (QUB) is expanding its postgraduate training in pharmaceutical analysis to meet what its faculty describe as an "exponential increase in the demand for highly-skilled analytical scientists, both in industry and academia." The School of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering offers two MSc pathways—a Pharmaceutical Analysis with International Industrial Placement programme and a Pharmaceutical Analysis Higher Level Apprenticeship—both designed to equip graduates with advanced laboratory skills for careers in the pharmaceutical and related industries.
Professor Peter Nockemann, FRSC, Programme Director for the MSc in Pharmaceutical Analysis, frames the programme's rationale in direct response to workforce needs. "Recent years have seen an exponential increase in the demand for highly-skilled analytical scientists, both in industry and academia," he states. "This course offers advanced training in chemical analysis, with a focus on applications in the pharmaceutical sector."
Hands-On Training with Industry-Standard Instrumentation
A defining feature of both programmes is their emphasis on practical, laboratory-based learning. Students receive training on state-of-the-art separation techniques, including HPLC/MS and GC/MS, in a purpose-built Pharmaceutical Analysis laboratory designed in partnership with Agilent, described as a world-leading instrument manufacturer.
The curriculum spans a broad portfolio of analytical techniques, including liquid and gas chromatography (HPLC, GC), mass spectrometry (MS), thermal analysis (DSC, TGA), X-ray crystallography (PXRD, XRD), and Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) spectroscopy. Students also receive training on quality assurance and quality control (QA/QC) aspects of the pharmaceutical industry.
The School has made substantial strategic investment in its facilities, including a £4 million investment in research and teaching laboratory space. This has added equipment such as an environmental SEM facility, powder and single crystal X-ray diffraction equipment, a high-end confocal Raman microscope, 400 and 600 MHz nuclear magnetic resonance spectrometers, and a 500 MHz solid-state NMR spectrometer—the first instrument of this type in Northern Ireland. A further £1.2 million investment added an Ion-mobility qTOF MS and a SAXS instrument, both described as unique in Northern Ireland.
Two Pathways for Different Career Stages
The International Industrial Placement pathway is aimed at recent physical or life sciences graduates in chemistry, pharmacy, and biology, though it also accommodates working professionals through a part-time option. A key component is a placement year of at least nine months, which students may complete in any country worldwide, subject to visa requirements. Students can complete their research project either on return to QUB or during their placement.
The Higher Level Apprenticeship pathway is designed for individuals already employed in the sector who wish to develop their professional skills, delivered part-time one day per week. This programme is fully funded by the Department for the Economy (DfE), with no tuition fees payable by students. Applicants must be working for a company with a base in Northern Ireland and provide a letter of support from their employer confirming release for one day per week.
Curriculum and Research Training
The taught modules cover advanced separation science, solid-state characterisation, spectroscopic analysis methods, and quality assurance/control in the pharmaceutical industry. Students also complete an Advanced Practical Skills module involving a ten-week project chosen from three core topics: chromatographic method development and validation, quantitative determination of active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs) using spectroscopic techniques, and analysis of pharmaceutical co-crystals.
The research project provides training in tackling research problems in chemistry, with a strong emphasis on critical thinking, data analysis, and independent research.
Career Outcomes and Industry Links
The programmes maintain close ties with industry, with industrial partners influencing course structure and guest lectures from industry addressing real-world challenges. Professor Nockemann notes that analysts "are among the most sought after professionals with some of the highest employability rates."
Graduates have gone on to work for companies including Almac, Randox (搜索), Norbrook (搜索), Pfizer, and AbbVie (搜索). In the Complete University Guide 2026, Chemistry at QUB is ranked 13th out of 50 UK institutions, and is 2nd in the UK for Graduate Prospects (Outcomes) and joint 4th for Graduate Prospects (On Track).
Applications for both programmes received after 30th June 2026 may not be accepted, and a deposit is required to secure a place, reflecting high demand for the courses.
