RAGE Biotech Raises A$29 Million Series A to Advance RNA Therapeutics for Chronic Inflammatory Diseases
核心洞察
RAGE Biotech (搜索), a Monash University spin-off, secured A$29 million in Series A funding led by IP Group Australia (搜索) and Hostplus (搜索) to advance RNA-based therapeutics for chronic inflammatory diseases (搜索).
The company's lead program RB042 (搜索) is an inhaled splice-switching oligonucleotide therapy targeting chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (搜索) and inflammatory lung conditions (搜索), preparing for first-in-human clinical trials.
RAGE Biotech (搜索) appointed Dr Siro Perez as CEO and Dr Edwin Tucker as Chief Medical and Development Officer to lead the transition from pre-clinical research to clinical development.
RAGE Biotech (搜索), a Monash University spin-off developing next-generation RNA-based therapeutics, has secured A$29 million in Series A financing to accelerate its lead program toward first-in-human clinical studies. The Melbourne-based company is targeting chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (搜索) (COPD (搜索)) and related inflammatory lung conditions (搜索) with its precision therapeutic candidate RB042 (搜索).
The funding round was led by IP Group Australia (搜索) and Hostplus (搜索), with participation from Monash Ventures (搜索), representing a significant milestone as the company transitions from pre-clinical research to clinical development. The investment will support the advancement of RB042 (搜索), an inhaled splice-switching oligonucleotide (SSO) therapy designed to target chronic inflammatory diseases (搜索).
Leadership Appointments Drive Clinical Transition
Alongside the funding announcement, RAGE Biotech (搜索) named two senior leadership appointments to guide its clinical development strategy. Dr Siro Perez, who previously led IP Group Australia (搜索)'s Life Sciences portfolio and played a key role in establishing RAGE Biotech, has been appointed Chief Executive Officer. Dr Edwin Tucker joins as Chief Medical and Development Officer, bringing experience from senior clinical leadership roles in the United States, including Chief Medical Officer at Jasper Therapeutics where he oversaw programs in inflammation and antibody therapy.
"I have deep conviction in the promise of RB042 (搜索) to overcome chronic disease where the unmet need is immense and current therapies are limited to symptom management," said Dr Perez. "RB042 offers the potential for a disease-modifying therapy in COPD (搜索), a market with millions of patients worldwide and few effective options."
Dr Tucker described RAGE Biotech (搜索)'s approach as "an exciting and credible path to transform care for patients with severe inflammatory disease." Founding CEO Dr Chris Wraight will remain with the company as Chief Scientific Officer, continuing to oversee scientific strategy and pipeline expansion.
Novel Therapeutic Approach Targets RAGE Pathway
RAGE Biotech (搜索) emerged from the School of Translational Medicine within the Faculty of Medicine, Nursing and Health Sciences at Monash University. The company's scientific foundation combines expertise in splice-switching oligonucleotide therapeutics with research in RAGE (搜索) biology, a pathway central to inflammatory responses and tissue injury.
The therapeutic approach targets the Receptor for Advanced Glycation End-products (搜索) (RAGE (搜索)), which scientific founder Professor Merlin Thomas identified as "a critical driver of human disease." The company has developed a method to block RAGE by harnessing a natural inhibitor produced by the lungs, potentially enabling transformative therapies across multiple inflammatory indications.
"We've developed a novel way to block RAGE (搜索) by harnessing a natural inhibitor made by the lungs, enabling transformative therapies across a range of potential indications," Professor Thomas explained.
University Translation Success
The funding success reflects Monash University's expanding portfolio of ventures advancing medically impactful technologies. Deputy Vice-Chancellor Professor Robyn Ward AM highlighted the institution's track record in research commercialization, noting that "Monash has an exceptional track record of research translation and commercialisation: we are the number one university in Australia for industry research investment."
"RAGE Biotech (搜索)'s achievement demonstrates how collaboration, partnership and a commitment to innovation are central to the quest to turn breakthrough science into outcomes that improve lives," Professor Ward stated.
Ingmar Wahlqvist, Senior Director of New Ventures and Investments, emphasized the milestone's significance for Monash's innovation ecosystem: "By backing exceptional founders and science with targeted investment, we're building ventures that advance medicine and deliver tangible impact for patients worldwide."
With the newly raised capital, RAGE Biotech (搜索) plans to advance RB042 (搜索) into early clinical testing while expanding development across additional inflammatory indications, positioning the company to address significant unmet medical needs in chronic inflammatory disease management.
