Roche announced on June 29, 2026, the launch of AXELIOS 1 (搜索), a next-generation single-molecule sequencing platform powered by the company's proprietary sequencing by expansion (SBX) technology. The platform represents a significant advancement in genomics research, delivering a unique combination of accuracy, speed, flexibility, scalability, and cost efficiency that addresses critical bottlenecks in both genomics and clinical research.

The SBX Technology: A Novel Approach to Sequencing
At the core of the AXELIOS 1 (搜索) platform is the sequencing by expansion (SBX) technology, a novel approach that uses a sophisticated biochemical process to encode the sequence of a target nucleic acid molecule — DNA or RNA — into a measurable surrogate polymer called an "Xpandomer." These Xpandomers are approximately fifty times longer than the original molecule and encode sequence information into high signal-to-noise reporters, providing clear signals with minimal background noise when threaded through a nanopore. This design significantly improves the accuracy of single-molecule sequencing.
The SBX chemistry is coupled with a reusable, high-throughput complementary metal–oxide–semiconductor (CMOS) sensor module containing millions of nanopores, along with an advanced analysis module that enables ultra-rapid, near real-time base calls and analysis. The platform is fundamentally designed for flexibility and performance, capable of handling everything from smaller, faster batches to large-scale genomic projects without requiring changes to systems or workflows.
Proven Real-World Capabilities
AXELIOS 1 (搜索) launches with demonstrated real-world capabilities through collaborations with leading institutions, including Hartwig Medical Foundation (搜索) and Broad Clinical Labs (搜索). Studies conducted with these partners have confirmed that the platform delivers impressive accuracy and throughput with record-breaking speed and superior cost efficiency. Early-access users have also garnered the world record for the fastest DNA sequencing technique.
The collaborative ecosystem extends to library preparation and analysis tools. Roche has established a partnership with 10x Genomics (搜索) for single-cell and spatial application kits, and the platform supports SBX via Google DeepVariant as well as the open-source suite of XOOS tools. Roche will also offer its own library prep kits and a free open-source bioinformatics analysis suite tailored for SBX technology.
Since the SBX technology was unveiled in early 2025, multiple research applications have been tested as proof of principle, including whole-genome sequencing, RNA-sequencing, single-cell RNA, spatial, and methylation analyses. The platform's flexible sequencing run setup and high throughput enable laboratories of all sizes to expand their research capabilities with a single instrument. Workflows can be adapted for various experimental needs, including reads of up to approximately 1,500 base pairs under appropriate sample and library preparation conditions, and ultra-fast processing from sample to Variant Calling Format.
AXELIOS 1 (搜索) is currently designated for research use only and is not for use in diagnostic procedures.
