Roche announced on July 14, 2026, the introduction of the cobas HDV test (搜索), the first high-throughput, fully automated diagnostic assay for the detection and quantification of Hepatitis D (搜索) Virus (HDV) RNA. The test is now available in countries accepting the CE mark and runs on the company's cobas 5800, 6800, and 8800 systems, platforms already widely deployed in laboratories worldwide.

The Burden of Hepatitis D (搜索)
Hepatitis D (搜索) affects an estimated 12 million people globally and is considered the most aggressive form of viral hepatitis, often leading to liver failure, cirrhosis, and liver cancer faster than other types. The virus is a unique satellite virus that can only infect individuals who already carry the Hepatitis B (搜索) virus (HBV). It can manifest as a co-infection—simultaneous infection with both viruses—or as a super-infection, where HDV infection occurs after chronic Hepatitis B is already established.
Co-infection may explain approximately one in five cases of liver disease, while super-infection is particularly dangerous, with over 90% of cases becoming chronic and accelerating toward liver damage. Symptoms can be severe and include jaundice, extreme fatigue, abdominal pain, and nausea. Because HDV requires HBV to replicate, vaccination against Hepatitis B (搜索) remains the most effective prevention strategy.
Closing a Critical Diagnostic Gap
Despite the severity of Hepatitis D (搜索), testing has historically been limited to manual methods or lab-developed tests that can vary in consistency.
