Roche Launches India's First Subcutaneous Immunotherapy for Lung Cancer, Reducing Treatment Time to Seven Minutes

The launch represents a significant shift in how immunotherapy, one of the most transformative advances in modern oncology, can be delivered to patients across the country.
Dr Sajjan Rajpurohit, Director and Head of Medical Oncology at Medanta (搜索), emphasized the clinical benefits: "Repeated hospital visits and long treatment hours add to the emotional and physical burden of cancer care. Subcutaneous administration can allow patients to be treated much more quickly and easily, improving their overall treatment experience while reducing waiting times and treatment delays."
Clinical Evidence and Patient Preference
Clinical studies have demonstrated that the subcutaneous formulation is comparable in efficacy and safety to the original intravenous version. According to Roche, four out of five patients chose the subcutaneous form over IV administration in the IMscin002 study, citing shorter clinic stays, greater comfort, and reduced emotional distress.
The efficiency gains are substantial. Roche estimates that for every patient treated via IV infusion, up to five could be treated via subcutaneous injection within the same timeframe, potentially revolutionizing treatment capacity in healthcare facilities.
Regulatory Approval and Global Reach
India's drug regulator, the DCGI (搜索), has approved Tecentriq SC for adjuvant and metastatic non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). The drug was first approved by the UK's Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) in 2023, followed by the US Food and Drug Administration in 2024. It has since been approved in more than 85 countries, with over 10,000 patients treated globally.
Addressing India's Cancer Burden
"India's growing cancer burden requires us to rethink how cancer care is delivered," said Dr Amit Rauthan, Head of Medical Oncology at Manipal Hospital Bangalore. "Shorter administration formats can help improve accessibility and make cancer care more practical for patients and healthcare systems alike."
Competitive Landscape
Tecentriq enters India's growing immunotherapy market where it competes with established drugs including Merck (搜索)'s Keytruda, Bristol Myers Squibb (搜索)'s Opdivo, and AstraZeneca's Imfinzi. While these competitors remain established in the market, many still rely primarily on IV delivery methods, though subcutaneous versions are emerging. Merck has Keytruda Qlex (SC) and Bristol Myers Squibb has Opdivo Qvantig (SC) approved in Europe, while AstraZeneca's Imfinzi remains mainly IV-based.
The subcutaneous delivery method represents a global trend toward quicker, more convenient oncology treatments, potentially giving Roche a competitive advantage in the Indian market where treatment efficiency and patient convenience are increasingly important considerations for healthcare providers and patients alike.
