Roche Receives FDA Clearance for First TAGS-Powered Respiratory Test Detecting Four Major Viruses
核心洞察
Roche's cobas Respiratory 4-flex (搜索) becomes the first FDA-cleared assay utilizing innovative TAGS technology, simultaneously detecting SARS-CoV-2 (搜索), influenza A (搜索), influenza B (搜索), and RSV (搜索) in a single test.
The new diagnostic platform offers customizable testing menus and digital reflex capabilities, allowing laboratories to tailor testing based on physician orders and obtain additional results from the same sample.
TAGS technology uses multiplex PCR testing combined with color, temperature and data processing to detect multiple targets within a single optical channel, streamlining laboratory workflows.
Roche announced FDA 510(k) clearance for its cobas Respiratory 4-flex (搜索) assay, marking the first regulatory approval for a diagnostic test powered by the company's innovative TAGS (Temperature-Activated Generation of Signal) technology. The new test simultaneously detects and differentiates the four most common respiratory viruses: SARS-CoV-2 (搜索), influenza A (搜索), influenza B (搜索), and respiratory syncytial virus (搜索) (RSV (搜索)).
The cobas Respiratory 4-flex (搜索) consolidates these four key targets into a single, efficient assay designed to simplify laboratory workflows and optimize resource utilization. The test integrates seamlessly with Roche's existing cobas 5800, 6800, and 8800 molecular laboratory instruments, providing accurate PCR results that enable physicians to promptly initiate targeted treatment plans.
Revolutionary TAGS Technology Platform
TAGS technology represents a significant advancement in molecular diagnostics, using multiplex polymerase chain reaction (PCR) testing combined with color, temperature, and data processing to enable detection and differentiation of multiple targets within a single optical channel. This innovation allows laboratories to detect more targets on high-throughput platforms while supporting diagnostic stewardship and reaching broader patient populations.
"The cobas Respiratory 4-flex (搜索) assay offers a significant technological advancement that empowers labs to address evolving respiratory testing demands now and in the future," said Brad Moore, President and CEO of Roche Diagnostics (搜索) North America. "The expanded testing capabilities, enabled by TAGS technology, will allow labs to deliver reliable and relevant patient testing, while also optimizing healthcare resources."
Customizable Testing and Digital Reflex Capabilities
The cobas Respiratory 4-flex (搜索) offers laboratories unprecedented flexibility through its customizable testing menu, enabling tailored testing based on physician orders and patient needs. This approach reduces the need for repeat healthcare visits and additional tests by providing comprehensive respiratory pathogen detection in a single assay.
A key innovation is the test's "digital reflex" option, which allows for additional testing from the same sample beyond initially requested results. For example, if a physician requests influenza A (搜索) and B testing and results are negative, digital reflex can automatically provide results for SARS-CoV-2 (搜索) or RSV (搜索) from the same sample. While raw data for all targets is generated and available, only requested results are analyzed and reported, ensuring targeted and efficient testing.
"Our goal for the Respiratory 4-flex is to allow labs to customize testing based on clinical needs, patient symptoms, which are often similar, and to better support a constantly shifting respiratory landscape," said Denise Heaney, Ph.D., Chief Medical Partner, Molecular Solutions and Infectious Disease at Roche Diagnostics (搜索).
Clinical Applications and Specifications
The cobas Respiratory 4-flex (搜索) provides qualitative detection and differentiation of respiratory viruses in nasopharyngeal swab specimens from patients presenting with signs and symptoms of respiratory infection (搜索), along with clinical and epidemiological risk factors. The test runs on Roche's established cobas 5800, 6800, and 8800 systems, leveraging existing laboratory infrastructure.
Digital reflex functionality will be available at launch on the cobas 5800 system, with availability on cobas 6800 and 8800 systems planned for software version 2.0, currently in development.
Expanding Respiratory Diagnostics Portfolio
This launch further expands Roche's comprehensive respiratory portfolio, which includes a broad range of singleplex and multiplex assays for respiratory viral and bacterial infections. The addition of TAGS-powered testing capabilities positions the company to support patient testing needs across the continuum of care while laying groundwork for future expanded testing capabilities.
The cobas Respiratory 4-flex (搜索) represents Roche's continued commitment to advancing molecular diagnostics through innovative technology platforms that address evolving healthcare needs and support improved patient outcomes through timely, accurate diagnosis of respiratory infections.
