Royal United Hospitals Bath (搜索) (RUH Bath) has launched a clinical trial recruitment drive to test two repurposed oral medications for preventing recurrent strokes and cognitive decline in patients with lacunar stroke (搜索) caused by small vessel disease (搜索). The study will evaluate isosorbide mononitrate and cilostazol, both currently used for other medical conditions, in addressing an area with no existing treatments.
Trial Design and Patient Population
The 18-month study is recruiting patients aged 30 and above who have experienced lacunar ischemic strokes involving small blood vessels and do not have other active neurological diseases. Participants will undergo initial assessment followed by progress monitoring through phone calls throughout the study period.
Lacunar strokes occur when blockages cut off blood supply to parts of the brain through small vessel disease (搜索). According to Hayley Stoney, RUH Stroke Research Nurse, "A lacunar stroke (搜索) is quite common, but can still have very serious consequences for people, particularly the way it can affect people's thinking, balance and walking."
Addressing Unmet Medical Need
The trial addresses a significant gap in stroke treatment, as RUH Bath reports there are currently no treatments available for small vessel disease (搜索). The researchers are repurposing two existing medications that are already approved for other therapeutic indications to explore their potential in stroke prevention.
