Rubedo Life Sciences Partners with SVAX to Advance Anti-Aging Drug RLS-1496 in Middle East Phase 2 Trials
核心洞察
Rubedo Life Sciences (搜索) announced a strategic partnership with SVAX (搜索) to conduct Phase 2 clinical trials for RLS-1496, a first-in-class GPX4 (搜索) modulator targeting senescent cells, in Saudi Arabia and Dubai starting Q2 2026.
The collaboration addresses significant unmet medical needs in atopic dermatitis (搜索), which affects up to 30% of the adult population in Saudi Arabia and presents differently across ethnicities.
RLS-1496 represents a novel approach to anti-aging therapeutics by selectively targeting pathologic senescent "zombie" cells through ferroptosis to restore tissue homeostasis.
Rubedo Life Sciences (搜索) announced a strategic partnership with SVAX (搜索) during the Future Investment Initiative week in Riyadh to advance Phase 2 clinical trials for its lead anti-aging drug candidate RLS-1496 in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and the Emirate of Dubai. The collaboration marks a significant expansion of the clinical-stage biotech's global footprint and addresses substantial unmet medical needs in the Middle East region.
Novel Anti-Aging Mechanism Targets Senescent Cells
RLS-1496 represents a first-in-class, potentially disease-modifying selective GPX4 (搜索) modulator designed for both topical and oral administration. The drug targets pathologic senescent or "aged" cells that drive chronic degenerative diseases and conditions associated with biological aging processes, including immunology and inflammation, dermatology and skin aging, metabolic syndrome, sarcopenia (搜索), and neurodegenerative disease.
The therapeutic mechanism centers on modulating GPX4 (搜索) in ferroptosis-sensitive senescent cells. In certain pathologic cells, aging is associated with an imbalance in GPX4, and modulation of this target sensitizes cells to ferroptosis, a type of programmed cell death believed to be an achilles heel of senescent "zombie" cells. By clearing these cells, RLS-1496 may not only fight disease but also support healthy cells to function properly and restore tissue homeostasis.
Addressing Regional Medical Needs
The partnership specifically targets atopic dermatitis (搜索), a condition with significant treatment burden in Saudi Arabia. Studies have found the prevalence as high as 30% of the adult population in the Kingdom, according to Dr. Frederick Beddingfield, Rubedo's CEO. Published studies and meta-analyses indicate that atopic dermatitis presents differently across ethnicities, creating ongoing challenges in the standard of care worldwide.
"As a truly global longevity therapeutics company, we are thrilled to be partnering with SVAX (搜索) to incorporate patient populations that have historically been underrepresented in clinical trials - particularly in Atopic Dermatitis (搜索)," said Beddingfield. "Incorporating study sites at the crossroads of three continents will help provide a more representative overall patient population for the evaluation of RLS-1496 in this important condition."
Strategic Partnership Details
SVAX (搜索), a leading Saudi vaccine and biologics manufacturer and clinical research organization, will support Rubedo's regulatory filings and conduct of the planned Phase 2 atopic dermatitis (搜索) clinical trial in conjunction with Fakeeh Care Group (搜索). The Gulf Cooperation Council study is expected to begin in Q2 2026, following recent U.S. FDA clearance of the Investigational New Drug application for a Phase 1b/2a study with RLS-1496 in patients with actinic keratosis (搜索).
Prof. Mazen Hassanain, Managing Director and CEO of SVAX (搜索), emphasized the regional significance: "We are thrilled to be working with the Rubedo team to bring this innovative therapy to Saudi Arabia, particularly when conditions like Atopic Dermatitis (搜索) and Vitiligo (搜索) are such high areas of unmet need in our region."
Hevolution Foundation's Strategic Investment
The partnership underscores Rubedo's integration into Hevolution Foundation (搜索)'s portfolio, highlighting the region's strategic importance in healthspan research and life sciences. Established by Royal Order in 2018 and launched in 2021, Hevolution Foundation has allocated over $400M in funding over the last three years to accelerate research and entrepreneurship in healthspan science.
"At Hevolution, we're driving global advancements in healthspan science. We're thrilled by Rubedo Life Science's pivotal step with RLS-1946 entering Phase 2 trials," said HRH Princess Dr. Haya Bint Khaled bin Bandar Al Saud, Hevolution SVP of Research. "This collaboration is set to revolutionize geroscience and fortify the regional biotech landscape."
AI-Driven Drug Discovery Platform
Rubedo's proprietary AI-driven ALEMBIC™ drug discovery platform is developing novel first-in-class small molecules to selectively target pathologic and senescent cells, which play a key role in the progression of pulmonary, dermatological, oncological, neurodegenerative, fibrotic, and other chronic disorders. The company is currently advancing RLS-1496 through Phase I clinical trials while building its pipeline of selective cellular rejuvenation medicines.
