Akagera Medicines (搜索), a scientific research company conceived by the late Dr. Paul Farmer, Daryl Drummond, and Michael Fairbanks, has advanced its lead tuberculosis (搜索) drug candidate, AKG-100 (搜索), into Phase I clinical trials. The milestone, announced by Fairbanks in a recent blog post, marks a significant step in Rwanda's broader effort to ensure that life-saving treatments for diseases disproportionately affecting the continent are developed with African needs at the center.
The company filed a patent for AKG-100 (搜索) in March and has since moved the candidate into first-in-human studies designed to evaluate its safety and pharmacological profile. Fairbanks has indicated that the path toward regulatory approval remains on track.
A Mission Rooted in Urgent Need
Akagera Medicines (搜索) was founded with a mission to develop drugs and vaccines targeting tuberculosis (搜索), Lassa fever (搜索), HIV (搜索), maternal and pediatric RSV (搜索), and to help prevent a future avian influenza pandemic. Collectively, these diseases remain among the leading causes of death across the African continent.
Tuberculosis (搜索) alone remains the world's deadliest infectious disease. According to the World Health Organization, an estimated 10.8 million people fell ill with TB in 2023, and 1.23 million died from it. The burden is not distributed evenly: approximately 85 to 87 percent of global cases occur in 30 high TB burden countries, with the largest share concentrated in South-East Asia and Africa.
Yet few major pharmaceutical companies invest heavily in treatments for these diseases because the economics often do not align with profit-driven business models. Rwanda understood that this reality had to be addressed.
Sovereign Investment as Catalyst
The Rwanda Social Security Board (搜索) (RSSB) became an early investor in Akagera Medicines (搜索), a decision that reflects the country's determination to ensure access to essential and innovative treatments for diseases that have claimed countless lives. That investment by a sovereign nation attracted support from partners who recognized the company's potential. Akagera Medicines is now backed by the Gates Foundation (搜索), the European Investment Bank (搜索) (EIB), and the Coalition for Epidemic Preparedness Innovation (搜索) (CEPI), among others.
In just four years, the company has filed 79 patent applications across six continents and multiple jurisdictions. It also secured patents in the United States at a remarkable pace. The U.S. Patent and Trademark Office described its technology as "novel" and possessing "wide industrial applicability."
The Structural Gap Driving Health Sovereignty
The push for local capability reflects a sobering reality: when a new drug is introduced to the market, it can take up to 10 years or more before it becomes widely available in Africa. At the height of the Covid-19 pandemic, when it became extremely difficult for African countries to access basic therapeutics, let alone life-saving vaccines, it became apparent that health sovereignty was a matter of life and death.
One result of Rwanda's efforts is the establishment of BioNTech's BioNTainers at the Kigali Special Economic Zone, expected to produce vaccines and therapeutics for malaria, tuberculosis (搜索), and other mRNA-based treatments.
Parallel Developments in Biologics Manufacturing
The broader ecosystem is expanding. This summer, Bio Usawa (搜索) is preparing to open an end-to-end biotechnology manufacturing facility in Kigali to support the production of biologic therapies for regional markets. The aim is to help ensure that therapies critical to cancer treatment and sight preservation are not luxuries but reliably available medicines.
Africa records roughly 1.2 million new cancer cases annually and more than 700,000 cancer-related deaths, with incidence expected to rise sharply. For years, monoclonal antibodies for cancer and anti-VEGF therapies for eye disease became standard care in wealthier countries while remaining largely inaccessible across Africa. High prices and dependence on global supply chains turned proven science into unreachable care.
A Transformation in the Making
For ordinary Rwandans, the investment in health sovereignty could mean the difference between life and death. As Fairbanks noted, the path toward regulatory approval for AKG-100 (搜索) remains on track, and Rwanda stands to benefit more than most from this transformation. The emergence of platforms capable of changing the access paradigm at scale signals that Africa's long-standing lack of local manufacturing capacity is beginning to change, driven by globally trained African scientists, clinicians, and biotechnology leaders returning to build institutions aligned with international standards.
