Targeting Inflammation to Prevent Preterm Birth
Rytvela (搜索) works by targeting IL-1β (搜索), a pro-inflammatory signal that contributes to preterm labor (搜索) by triggering inflammatory cascades in the uterus and placenta. Unlike existing IL-1β-targeting drugs, Rytvela avoids immune suppression, leaving the immune system intact to protect both mother and fetus.
"Addressing an unmet medical need, Rytvela (搜索) represents a promising treatment approach to safely prolong pregnancy and fetal growth while allowing newborn organs to develop in utero," said Dr. Sylvain Chemtob, neonatologist at Centre Hospitalier Ste Justine (搜索) in Montreal, Quebec, and senior author of the study.
The drug prevented inflammation-induced neonatal tissue injury and promoted neonatal development, even when administered after exposure to inflammation. This represents a significant advancement over current treatments, which typically only delay labor for less than 48 hours without preventing preterm birth (搜索) or allowing additional fetal development time.
Superior Efficacy in Preclinical Models
In the preclinical study, Rytvela (搜索) not only reduced preterm birth (搜索) rates by 40% but also decreased infant mortality when administered after the onset of preterm labor (搜索). The prolonged gestation allowed for continued fetal development, addressing the primary concern with preterm births where neonatal complications arise largely due to underdeveloped fetal organs.
"Our intention in developing Rytvela (搜索) for clinical use was to allow greater maturation of the fetus before birth while suppressing damaging inflammation, which currently available drugs do not do," explained Dr. Tiffany Habelrih, lead author of the study. "Rytvela represents a promising treatment approach to safely prolong gestation and offspring maturation, thereby protecting the fetus/newborn against detrimental inflammation-triggered preterm birth (搜索)."
Addressing a Global Health Crisis
Preterm birth (搜索) affects 13.5 million births annually worldwide and is responsible for over 900,000 deaths each year. Surviving infants often experience both short- and long-term complications due to incomplete organ and system development at birth, compounded by exposure to dangerous inflammation.
Current treatments for women in preterm labor (搜索) focus on stopping or slowing contractions but provide limited benefit in terms of pregnancy prolongation or fetal development. The inability of existing therapies to address the underlying inflammatory processes represents a significant gap in care.

Path to Clinical Development
The researchers are finalizing their preclinical research and preparing to advance Rytvela (搜索) to clinical trials in humans. Given the promising preclinical data demonstrating both safety and efficacy, Rytvela has the potential to address many of the complications associated with preterm birth (搜索) while meeting a critical unmet medical need in maternal and neonatal care.
