"Across every measure we evaluated, we observed that the recombinant protein-based vaccine consistently exhibited lower reactogenicity and less disruption to patient activities than the comparator mRNA vaccine," said Dr. Marcel E. Patient-Reported Outcomes and Real-World Impact
Beyond clinical measures, the study captured patient-reported outcomes that demonstrate real-world relevance of the tolerability differences. Nuvaxovid recipients reported less disruption to daily activities, including work, school, recreational activities, and caretaking responsibilities, over the seven days following vaccination.
The study revealed behavioral insights into vaccination decision-making, with more than half of all participants reporting they scheduled their vaccination on a specific day of the week in anticipation of potential side effects. This finding highlights how tolerability concerns actively shape vaccination behavior and planning.
"Individuals cite side effects as a reason they avoid COVID-19 (搜索) vaccination. These differences could have a significant impact on improving vaccination uptake," Dr. Curlin noted.
Implications for Routine Vaccination Strategies
The tolerability profile differences may have broader implications for sustainable COVID-19 (搜索) vaccination programs. Thomas Triomphe, Executive Vice President, Vaccines at Sanofi, emphasized the connection between patient experience and long-term vaccination compliance.
"The patient experience with vaccination is essential, because it determines not only whether people get vaccinated, but also whether they come back year after year for routine protection," Triomphe said. "These results show that Nuvaxovid can play a meaningful role in making routine COVID-19 (搜索) vaccination a reality for more people."
Disease Burden and Vulnerable Populations
COVID-19 (搜索) continues to pose significant health risks beyond immediate respiratory illness. The disease increases long-term cardiovascular complications risk, including heart attacks and strokes, while older adults hospitalized for COVID-19 face substantially higher mortality risk than those hospitalized for influenza.
In the United States, an estimated 74% of adults have at least one risk factor for severe COVID-19 (搜索) illness, including cardiovascular disease (搜索), chronic lung disease (搜索), diabetes (搜索), and obesity (搜索). Originally licensed by Novavax, Sanofi now holds market authorization for Nuvaxovid in the United States, European Union, and United Kingdom.
