The research, conducted by a joint team from Korea University Guro Hospital and Seoul National University College of Pharmacy (搜索), analyzed 74 patients with advanced NSCLC who received immune checkpoint inhibitors (搜索) as first-line treatment. The findings were published in the international journal Scientific Reports under the title, "Impact of Sarcopenia (搜索) and Blood Biomarkers on Prognosis in Patients with Advanced Non-Small Cell Lung Cancer (搜索) Receiving First-Line Immune Checkpoint Inhibitor Therapy."
Sarcopenia (搜索) Linked to Faster Disease Progression
The research team, led by Professors Chuhwan Choi and Seungryong Lee of the Department of Respiratory and Allergy Medicine at Korea University Guro Hospital, along with Jieun Park, PhD, and Professor Youngki Shin of Seoul National University College of Pharmacy (搜索), measured muscle mass to determine the presence of sarcopenia (搜索) and analyzed inflammatory responses and immune cell changes from blood samples.
The results revealed a clear divide: patients with sarcopenia (搜索) experienced faster cancer progression and a shorter duration of effectiveness from immune checkpoint inhibitors (搜索) compared to those without sarcopenia. Furthermore, sarcopenia was identified as an independent predictor of poorer prognosis in patients receiving immunotherapy.
Inflammatory and Immune Mechanisms Identified
Beyond the clinical outcomes, the study uncovered underlying biological mechanisms. Patients with sarcopenia (搜索) exhibited more active inflammatory responses in the body. Notably, these patients also showed higher expression of TIGIT (搜索), a protein associated with reduced immune cell function. The combination proved particularly detrimental—patients with both sarcopenia and high TIGIT expression had the worst treatment outcomes among all study participants.
Toward Personalized Treatment Strategies
Professor Chuhwan Choi emphasized the clinical implications of the findings. "This study confirmed that sarcopenia (搜索) can be an important predictor of immunotherapy outcomes in patients with advanced non-small cell lung cancer (搜索)," he said, adding, "We expect that assessing both sarcopenia and blood biomarkers in the future will help establish personalized treatment strategies for each patient."
The study addresses a persistent challenge in oncology: although immunotherapy represents a leading treatment for advanced NSCLC, outcomes vary considerably from patient to patient, creating an ongoing need for reliable predictive indicators. By identifying sarcopenia (搜索) and associated blood biomarkers as meaningful prognostic markers, this research may help clinicians better stratify patients and tailor treatment approaches accordingly.
